Scientists Explored the Mariana Trench — What They Found Is More Terrifying Than Space
Inside the Mariana Trench, where pressure, darkness and strange life forms rival anything in space
There’s a place on Earth more hostile than the surface of Mars — and it’s hiding beneath the Pacific Ocean.
No sunlight. No warmth. Pressure strong enough to crush a submarine like a tin can. And somehow, life still survives down there.
It’s called the Challenger Deep, and it sits at the bottom of the Mariana Trench — the deepest known point on the planet. Fewer people have ever reached it than have walked on the Moon.
How Deep Is the Mariana Trench?

The Mariana Trench reaches a maximum depth of roughly 10,935 metres at Challenger Deep, its lowest point, in the western Pacific Ocean near the Mariana Islands.
To put that in perspective, if Mount Everest were dropped into the trench, its peak would still sit around two kilometres below the surface of the water.

The trench itself stretches for about 2,550 kilometres and averages 69 kilometres wide, formed where the Pacific Plate slides beneath the smaller Mariana Plate.
Exploring the Challenger Deep: A Brief History
The trench was first identified in 1875 by the crew of HMS Challenger, using nothing more than a weighted sounding line dropped over the side of the ship.
It wasn’t until 1960 that anyone actually reached the bottom. Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh descended in the bathyscaphe Trieste, becoming the first humans to see Challenger Deep with their own eyes.
More Recent Descents
Decades later, film director James Cameron made a solo dive in 2012 aboard the Deepsea Challenger, spending hours filming and collecting samples from the seafloor.
In 2019, explorer Victor Vescovo went even deeper, reaching 10,927 metres and discovering that the trench floor isn’t flat, as scientists had long assumed, but made up of ridges and sloped planes.
What Lives in the Mariana Trench?
Despite the extreme conditions, the Mariana Trench is far from empty. Researchers have recorded snailfish living at depths beyond 8,000 metres, along with amphipods, jellyfish, and molluscs adapted to survive crushing pressure.
Some of the strangest residents are xenophyophores — single-celled organisms that can grow larger than 10 centimetres, making them among the biggest single cells known to science.
Near hydrothermal vents, temperatures can spike to over 300°C, creating pockets of extreme heat just metres from water that sits close to freezing everywhere else.
Crushing Pressure and Total Darkness
At the bottom of the trench, water pressure is more than a thousand times greater than at sea level — enough to instantly destroy most manmade equipment without specialised reinforcement.
No natural light reaches these depths at all. Anything that lives here has evolved in complete darkness, relying on bioluminescence, touch, or chemical signals instead of sight.
It’s an environment so hostile that, for decades, scientists assumed nothing could survive there at all.
Why the Deep Ocean Is Scarier Than Space
Here’s the unsettling part: humans have mapped the surface of the Moon and Mars in far more detail than we’ve mapped our own ocean floor. More people have travelled into space than have ever reached Challenger Deep.
The trench isn’t just extreme. It’s closer to us than the stars, yet we understand less about it than we do about worlds millions of kilometres away.
Even human impact has already reached the bottom. During Victor Vescovo’s 2019 dive, his team didn’t just find four new species — they also found a plastic bag and sweet wrappers resting on the seafloor, nearly 11 kilometres down.
It’s proof that the deepest, darkest place on Earth still hasn’t escaped us — even though we’ve barely begun to understand it.
