They were first detected in Queensland in 2001, and they’ve been spreading ever since — through soil, floodwaters, even by “rafting” across water in their thousands.
They’re not picky eaters.
Fire ants prey on ground-nesting animals, insects, small reptiles, and anything else unlucky enough to be in their path.
Government researchers have modelled what unchecked fire ant spread could do to native wildlife.
Nearly 70% of reptiles. Almost all amphibian species. Gone, in affected regions.
That includes snakes. Eggs. Hatchlings.
An ant army capable of decimating reptile populations wouldn’t exactly stop politely at the taipan.
Why Every Attempt to Fix Nature Backfires

In 1935, cane toads were released to control a beetle destroying sugar cane crops. They didn’t eat the beetles. They poisoned everything that tried to eat them instead, and spread across the entire continent.
