What Really Happens When You Take Antibiotics?

Antibiotics: One of the most prescribed drugs in the modern world! The evidence that proves how harmful this practice is has been available for a while now. Taking a routine course of antibiotics and moreover pouring them into our food has led to some serious and dangerous side effects, greatly affecting human health and immunity and creating highly resistant bacteria in the process. There are instances when antibiotics can save lives, so they have their place. But switching from specific, well-determined and occasional use to a broad use and even worse, to a using antibiotics as a “preventive” measure in humans and animals, is totally insane.

Let’s look at the evidence that confirms my statements:

Antibiotics as Prescription Drugs

People became so uncomfortable these days whenever they have a sniffle or infection. They all want it to go away, right away, at any cost! Immediate relief for a life of damaged health. But common infection doesn’t equal antibiotics! Our body simply doesn’t work like that.

The whole length of our digestive tract is coated with a bacterial layer providing a natural barrier against invaders, undigested food, toxins and parasites. If this “coating” (mucosal barrier) gets damaged, well… you get the picture! These beneficial bacteria protecting the gut wall also work against invasive pathogenic micro-organisms by producing antibiotic-like substances, anti-fungal volatiles, anti-viral substances. They engage the immune system to respond appropriately to invaders. Our healthy indigenous flora has a good ability to neutralise toxic substances from our food and environment, inactivate histamine and chelate heavy metals and other poisons. Again, this is all possible IF the “barrier” is intact…Without a well-functioning gut flora, the gut wall not only becomes unprotected, but also malnourished.

The variety of functions and the essential role of an intact mucosal barrier, a healthy gut flora, make this the root of our health. We simply cannot thrive without a healthy digestive system.

What is the clinical reality these days? A vast majority of people have a damaged gut flora and a major culprit to this is: ANTIBIOTICS!

Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride offers a well-researched summary of the most common disastrous health effects which directly involve antibiotics:

  • Destroy beneficial bacteria in the human body, not only in the gut but in other organs and tissues
  • they change bacteria, viruses and fungi from benign to pathogenic, giving them an ability to invade tissues and cause disease
  • they make bacteria resistant to antibiotics, so the industry has to work on more and more powerful new antibiotics to attack these new changed bacteria. A good example is tuberculosis, where wide use of antibiotics has created new varieties of the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis resistant to all existing antibiotics
  • they have a direct damaging effect on the immune system, making us more vulnerable to infections, which leads to a vicious cycle of more antibiotics and more infections

Since babies are born with a sterile gut flora, the mother essentially “downloads her gut health / flora into the baby through breastfeeding. No wonder why digestive problems are usually shown to get worse with each generation, considering the mother’s poor gut health and bottle feeding.

Penicillins and other antibiotics with “-cillin” at the end of their name has a damaging effect on two major groups of our resident bacteria: Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. This group of antibiotics allow bacteria normally found only in the bowel to travel to the intestines, which predisposes the person to development of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and other digestive disorders.

Tetracyclines and other “-cyclines” have a particular toxic effect on the gut wall by altering protein structure in the mucous membranes, making it vulnerable to invasion by pathogenic microbes and alerting the immune system to attack the changed proteins, starting an auto-immune reaction in the body against its own gut. They also stimulate the growth of pathogenic Candida, Staphylococci and Clostridia.

Aminoglycosides (Gentamycin, Kanamycin, Erythromicin) have a devastating effect on beneficial bacteria such as physiological E.coli and Enterococci. A prolonged course of treatment with these types of antibiotics can completely eliminate such beneficial bacteria from the digestive system, leaving it open to invasion by pathogenic species of E.coli and other microbes.

Antibiotics In Food

The problem of antibiotics overuse actually grew to proportions because it comes not only from prescription drugs, but from conventional food everywhere as well! This way, we are exposed indirectly to antibiotics since we are born and their negative effects are real.

Farm animals and poultry are routinely given antibiotics, so all the products made out of these (meat, milk, eggs) will also provide us with a constant supply of antibiotics AND antibiotic resistant bacteria, developed by the animals in their bodies, together with the toxins these bacteria produce.

Many large producers of meat and poultry feed antibiotics to their healthy food animals simply to offset the effects of overcrowding and poor sanitation, as well as to promote faster growth. Every year, nearly 30 million pounds of antibiotics are sold for use in food animals. In fact, up to 70% of all antibiotics sold in the United States go to healthy food animals.

Farmed fish and shellfish have antibiotics added, as well as a lot of fruits, vegetables and grains, legumes and nuts, which are sprayed with antibiotics to control disease.

Anti-bacterial Cleaners

“Germs do not cause disease! Nature never surrounded her children with enemies. It is the individual himself who makes disease possible in his own body because of poor living habits… Do mosquitoes make the water stagnant; or does stagnant water attract the mosquitoes? We should all be taught that germs are friends and scavengers attracted by disease, rather than enemies causing disease… As their internal environment is, so will be the attraction for any specific micro-organism… The germ theory and vaccination are kept going by commercialism.” — Dr. Robert R. Gross

Modern times brought along the common belief that everything has to be disinfected and sterilized. But it’s been proven by numerous studies that  constant use of conventional sanitizers and antibacterial soaps is also killing the beneficial bacteria existent on our hands, that is meant to actually protect ourselves from disease. In other words, resistant bacteria – superbugs” – will develop, and a former common cold will morph into a much more virulent and harder to treat infection.

Facts Of Antibiotic Overuse And Solutions To An Imminent Global Danger

Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently announced the new CDC statistics on the advance of the highly drug-resistant bacteria known as CRE (carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae). The reports are frightening:

  • Healthcare institutions in 42 states have now identified at least one case of CRE.
  • The occurrence of this resistance in the overall family of bacteria has risen at least four-fold over 10 years.
  • In the CDC’s surveillance networks, 4.6% of hospitals and 17.8% of long-term care facilities diagnosed this bug in the first half of 2012.

The U.K.’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies released a report in which she calls resistance a “catastrophic threat” which poses a national security risk as serious as terrorism. She warns that unless resistance is curbed, “We will find ourselves in a health system not dissimilar to the early 19th century” in which organ transplants, cancer chemotherapy, joint replacements and even minor surgeries become life-threatening.

In March 2012, researchers published a report drawing a link between bacteria on chicken and antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs). They compared E. coli samples from animals in processing plants to the strain of E. coli that causes urinary tract infections and found chicken to be the source of the bacteria. Last summer, the story gained major traction with the release of a related study by some of the same researchers who found that retail chickens had very high levels of antibiotic-resistant E. coli; about 85% of UTI infections came from this E. Coli strain.

Another published study from Germany concluded that methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is rarely found in pigs that are raised without antibiotics. Similarly, the farmers who live and work with these pigs were less likely to have the strain of MRSA commonly associated with livestock than farmers who worked with pigs who were regularly administered antibiotics. As one of the most notorious multidrug-resistant superbugs, MRSA is responsible for an estimated 19,000 deaths and 360,000 hospitalizations each year in the United States alone.

In September 2012, researchers at Stanford University concluded that consumers eating meat and poultry raised without antibiotics are 33% less likely to contract antibiotic-resistant infections than those who eat products raised conventionally.

Considering all this, how can YOU actively participate in the change of these serious events?

…STOP taking antibiotics with the first infection, rely on NATURAL, effective, safe and powerful antibiotics with NO side effects. My favourites are raw propolis, grapefruit seed extract, oregano oil, echinacea, Manuka honey. When you really need to take a course of antibiotics, always follow with a course of probiotics, to counteract the negative effects and maintain a healthy gut flora.

…buy and eat only ORGANIC meat, eggs and dairy  or at least which hasn’t had antibiotics added (you can find this on many product labels now)

…stay clean using natural, green cleaners for your body and house, and avoid anti-bacterial soaps,  as well as harsh, toxic chemicals.

…live a healthy life, eat whole food and take responsibility of your own precious health, so you don’t end up in hospitals and long-term care facilities, which are the most exposed to never ending disease.

Understanding Cannabis Oil

Although I’ve been aware of the recent positive discussion of cannabis oil as a treatment for various serious diseases, I was still sceptical to consider this as a viable solution for certain health disorders. After all, so many people these days are looking for the perfect miracle pill to solve their health issues! Is this another panacea? Is this another way of buying into the mentality of one-size-fits-all treatments that come in a bottle without making any necessary dietary and life style changes?

In the end, it all depends on how we really make use of these extracts that nature provided us and how clearly we see the “big picture” of true healing.

So it was time I found out more! I interviewed one of my colleagues with extensive knowledge on the matter – Steven Sinay, VP of Nutritional Science for Empower Genetics and a fellow Metabolic Typing practitioner.  This article is what  he kindly shared with me on  the  very interesting topic of cannabis oil.

Understanding Cannabis Oil

Raluca Schachter: What is cannabis oil and how does it work?

Steven Sinay: Cannabis Oil is a thick, sticky, resinous substance that is extracted from the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica). Cannabis oil is a base product that is prepared by separating the resins from the cannabis flowers (buds) using a solvent extraction process. Cannabis oil contains several Cannabinoids including Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component, and Cannabidiol (CBD), the medicinal component of cannabis.

For legal purposes becoming more commonly used over Cannabis oil, is Hemp oil which is being grown in Europe to have higher levels of CBD and with no THC. In 2001, the DEA issued a rule banning all import and cultivation of industrial grade hemp. In 2003, the Hemp Industries Association filed an Urgent Motion for Stay in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2004, the Ninth Circuit Court sided with the Hemp Industries Association.

In the decision, Judge Betty Fletcher wrote, “[T]hey (DEA) cannot regulate naturally occurring THC not contained within or derived from weed-i.e., non-psychoactive hemp is not included in Schedule I. The DEA has no authority to regulate drugs that are not scheduled, and it has not followed procedures required to schedule a substance. The DEA’s definition of “THC” contravenes the unambiguously expressed intent of Congress in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and cannot be upheld.”

Judge Fletcher is essentially saying that the DEA cannot regulate hemp or the chemicals within it because hemp contains no THC, is not weed, and is therefore not covered under  the controlled substances act; and the DEA cannot regulate substances that have not been scheduled. This is why you can purchase and sell CBD hemp oil.

Over the last 20 years Cannabis has been at the center of one of the most exciting and underreported developments in recent modern science. Research on weed’s effects led directly to the discovery of an unknown biochemical communication system in the human body, the Endocannabinoid System, which plays a crucial role in regulating our physiology, mood, and everyday experience.

The discovery of receptors in the brain that respond pharmacologically to Cannabis and the subsequent identification of endogenous cannabinoid compounds in our own bodies that bind to these receptors has significantly advanced our understanding of human biology, health, and disease.

It is an established scientific fact that cannabinoids and other components of cannabis can modulate many physiological systems in the human brain and body. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that trigger cannabinoid and other receptors. More than 100 cannabinoids have been identified in the weed plant. Of these, THC and CBD have been studied most extensively. In addition to cannabinoids produced by the plant, there are endogenous cannabinoids (anandamide and 2AG) that occur naturally in the body, as well as synthetic cannabinoids created by big pharma researchers.

Cannabinoids promote homeostasis at every level of biological life, from the sub-cellular, to the organism, and perhaps to the community and beyond. Here’s one example: autophagy, a process in which a cell sequesters part of its contents to be self-digested and recycled, is mediated by the cannabinoid system. While this process keeps normal cells alive, allowing them to maintain a balance between the synthesis, degradation, and subsequent recycling of cellular products, it has a deadly effect on malignant tumour cells, causing them to consume themselves in a programmed cellular suicide. The death of cancer cells, of course, promotes homeostasis and survival at the level of the entire organism.

Scientists associated with the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS) have elucidated a number of molecular pathways whereby CBD exerts a therapeutic impact. A preclinical study by Dr. Sean McAllister and his colleagues at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reports on how CBD kills breast cancer by down regulating a gene called ID-1, which is implicated in several types of aggressive cancer. Silencing the ID-1 gene is thus is an excellent strategy for a cancer treatment.

Extensive preclinical research much of it sponsored by the U.S. Government (see U.S. Patent below) indicates that CBD has potent anti-tumoral, antioxidant, anti-spasmodic, anti-psychotic, anti-convulsive, and neuroprotective properties. CBD directly activates serotonin receptors, causing an anti-depressant effect, as well.

The United States Government holds U.S. Patent 6,630,507 (filed 1999) on Cannabinoids stating in their patent: “Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention.”

Raluca Schachter: Under what conditions has cannabis oil proved to be most successful?

Steven Sinay: According to many CBD Researchers the following are a list of conditions that the use of CBD has been shown to improve: Acne, ADD/ADHD, Addiction, AIDS, ALS, Alzheimer’s Disease, Anorexia, Antibiotic Resistance, Anxiety, Atherosclerosis, Arthritis, Asthma, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Cancer, Colitis/Crohn’s, Depression, Diabetes, Endocrine Disorders, Epilepsy/Seizure, Fibromyalgia, Glaucoma, Heart Disease, Huntington’s Disease, Inflammatory Disorders, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Kidney Disease, Liver Disease, Metabolic Syndrome, Migraines, Mood Disorders, Motion Sickness, Multiple Sclerosis, Nausea, Neurodegeneration, Neuropathic Pain, Obesity, OCD, Osteoporosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Prion/Mad Cow Disease, PTSD, Rheumatism, Schizophrenia, Sickle Cell Anemia, Skin Conditions, Sleep Disorders, Spinal Cord Injury, and Stress Stroke/TBI.

Raluca Schachter: What should we look out for, in terms of the quality of cannabis oil?

Steven Sinay: Since cannabis oil products have only been in the market place for a short period of time, it is important to source these products just as you would your produce, meat, fish, etc. As far as I can tell there are not a lot of regulatory organizations monitoring the quality and purity of these sources. Be sure to look for a product that has gone through some sort of third party lab testing that detect contaminants like pesticides, fungicides, mycotoxins, microbes, etc. Equally as important consumers need to be aware of the concentration of their medicinal cannabis.

It is fundamental in allowing the consumer to choose the correct medicine for their symptoms, as well as determining the proper dose. It’s good practice to find a manufacturer that is not afraid to allow access to each Certificate of Analysis on every batch they produce. Here in the United States a non THC CBD product is classified as a dietary supplement and is legal in all 50 states.

Raluca Schachter: The nutritional world is quite flooded with hypes these days. But as we know through Metabolic Typing ®, there is no nutrient, remedy or food that can be beneficial for everybody. Any nutrient has different effects in different metabolisms, biochemically speaking. So there are no one size fits all remedies, really. From your experience, have you had the chance to observe how this remedy had different effects in different metabolisms?

Steven Sinay: As previously mentioned, at the right dosage, CBD has been shown to significantly help with anxiety, pain, neurodegeneration, inflammation, etc. An appropriately high dosage of CBD will give you all the desired affects you need, and there is really no risk of overdose as CBD is harmless even in high concentrations. However, most people will feel little effect if they take too low a dosage, effectively wasting CBD’s powerful beneficial properties.

With the above in mind, the importance of correct CBD dosage becomes obvious. People with different requirements and different metabolisms will need accordingly different CBD dosages to experience CBD’s positive effects, and dosages can vary dramatically because there is no one-size-fits-all “typical CBD dosage.” While there is no such thing as “too much CBD,” you can in fact take too little to feel a difference. Dosage can range anywhere from 2-3 mg, up to 100 mg, 200 mg, or 500 mg to 1000 mg on the super high end. Remember, you cannot overdose and there are no reported side effects from taking high concentrations of CBD. Most people only need around 2-3 mg per day to start feeling a difference. Yet people with stronger needs may need to start at a lower dose and work their way up until they find the right dose for their body.

Raluca Schachter: What are your thoughts regarding the future of cannabis in the medical field?

Steven Sinay: This is the $64,000 Dollar Question! With our government holding a patent on several Cannabinoids, it leads one to be a little sceptical. Why? The forces that would keep cannabis illegal are vocal and very well-funded, but they are not impervious to persistent effort. The lynch pin in the War on Drugs has always been cannabis. Without the suppression and interdiction of this popular and widely used substance, there simply would not be enough “illegal drug use” going on to justify the huge amount of money and resources spent on “fighting drugs.” Once again all based on the all mighty dollar!

I feel CBD and other Cannabinoids with the persistence from those who can, and are truly benefiting from its medicinal properties, along with natural healers promoting its use, will find its place in future modern medicine. Time will tell.

Yerba Mate: The Ethical And Healthier Alternative To Coffee

Published

on

Paul LendaGuest Writer

For a quick and easy pick-me-up, many in the West turn to coffee. Yes, that brown liquid that comes from roasted coffee beans. With around 100 mg of caffeine per cup, it delivers a powerful energy boost when you need it. However, drinking coffee has its downsides. Thankfully, there are more ethical and healthier alternatives to coffee like yerba mate.

Let’s take a look at the ethical and environmental problems with coffee.

For one thing, it takes a massive 140 litters/37 gallons of water to grow enough coffee beans needed to produce a single cup of coffee. That is a massive amount of water! A study published a few years appearing in BioScience found that most of the coffee farms in the world are causing massive destruction to the environments in which they are being grown. Specifically, the main issue is that most coffee shrubs are now being grown in direct sunlight instead of their natural shaded habitat.

This sort of cultivation is essentially monoculture farming like you see with corn and soybeans. The destructive nature of monoculture is well-known at this point, and coffee shouldn’t get a pass if we want to truly ensure our environment is a vibrant and healthy one.

Coffee farming is very resource-intensive and is driving tropical deforestation at a blazing rate. The environmental destruction of coffee growing goes on even further. Coffee wet milling destroys the ability for streams to provide drinking water for people in developing nations where coffee is grown. The polluted processing water gets into the local waterways and kills all life it comes into contact with, be it plants, animals, and even humans.

Also, slave-like conditions are commonplace in the coffee harvesting industry, especially the large coffee producers. They are also the major issues of debt slavery, the use of child labour, wage theft, and the highly unsafe use of toxic industrial-grade pesticides. Child slavery is rampant in the coffee industry, particularly in Guatemala and Columbia.

Enter: Yerba Mate

Yerba Mate is a plant popular in South American countries like Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina. In fact, it is far more popular than coffee in those nations. It provides a clean energy boost and contains less caffeine than coffee.

The energy you get from drinking a cup of yerba mate is more gradual and sustained than the quick and jittery jolt you get from coffee. The caffeine gets released differently, allowing your body to absorb it in a slower and more soothing way. That means you get the energy boost you can from coffee, but in a way that lacks the negative side effects of drinking coffee.

There is a reason why yerba mate has been called the “drink of the gods” for centuries. It comes loaded with powerful antioxidants. In fact, it’s even loaded with more antioxidants than green tea! It also contains an astonishing 24 vitamins and minerals, as well as 15 amino acids. It’s no wonder it is also called a “liquid vegetable” due to all of the powerful nutrients it contains.

Yerba mate is also much better for your digestive tract than coffee. It can take on parasites and clean out your digestive tract with ease. Not only that, but yerba mate has also been found to deactivate E. coli bacteria! Coffee is highly acidic, which can lead to developing ulcers, gastritis, acid reflux, and Crohn’s disease. Yerba mate not only doesn’t lead to any of those, but it supports a healthy digestive system.

With all of the great benefits yerba mate has to offer, and all of the downsides to coffee, the conscious choice for an external substance providing an energy boost is definitely yerba mate. Enjoy this crash-free energy raiser that is more ethical and healthier than coffee.

Toxic Gene Discovered In GM Crops Shows Approval Process Is Fatally Flawed

Toxic Gene Discovered In GM Crops Shows Approval Process Is Fatally Flawed

Mary West, Guest Writer

The recent revelation of a toxic gene lurking in genetically modified (GM) crops underscores the failure of food approval regulators to protect the public – again. A European watchdog group discovered that a virus gene which could be poisonous to humans was overlooked in the international approval process, creating more doubt over food safety.

New research by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) shows the missed gene is present in GM corn and soy crops grown around the globe for both human and animal consumption. Humans not only ingest the gene directly from eating GM corn and soy products but also indirectly from eating the meat, milk and eggs from the animals fed the crops.

The study reveals that 54 of the 86 GM plants in the US authorized for commercial growing and food contain the dangerous gene. As the research was conducted by independent experts rather than scientists critical of GM crops, the findings are particularly powerful.

Experts Express Outrage

While EFSA is contending the viral gene does not pose a threat to public health, GM critics vehemently disagree with their assessment. In the aftermath of the new revelation, critics are declaring the GM approval process to be fatally flawed and asserting that the crops involved should be recalled. Pete Riley, director of GM Freeze, says the gene’s discovery completely refutes assurances that GM technology is safe and is a clear warning that it is not well understood.

Upon reviewing the research by EFSA, Independent Science News said that because the viral gene was not caught by biotech companies and government regulators, “this situation represents a complete and catastrophic system failure.” Research clearly indicates the gene might be unsafe for humans and may also interfere with the normal functioning of crops, it added.

Peter Melchett of the Soil Association says that for years GM companies have deliberately attempted to stop independent researchers from evaluating their products. He explains that the failure of the approval system to discover the viral gene is what happens in the absence of independent scrutiny of GM crops.

The Proposed Farm Bill Would Make the Failed System Much Worse

The current GM regulatory and oversight system is terribly flawed, putting the public health at risk. However, a new farm bill would make what is already a failed system to be infinitely worse, posing an even greater danger to the public.

H.R. 5973, known as the Monsanto Protection Act, has a small part in section 733 that gives biotech companies carte blanche to do whatever they please with little federal and judicial oversight. The Center for Food Safety interprets 733 as an assault on fundamental safeguards that would limit judicial review.

Food Democracy Now warns that if the legislation passes, it would “strip judges of their constitutional mandate to protect consumer rights and the environment, while opening up the floodgates for the planting of new untested genetically engineered crops, endangering farmers, consumers and the environment.” An even more frightening synopsis is provided by RT Question More, which says the bill would lead to Frankenfood for consumers, the loss of profits for farmers and huge gains for biotech companies.

Please contact the members of the House of Representatives from your state and express your opposition to the proposed bill. A directory of this branch of Congress can be found here: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/members

Europe’s One Step Forward

While the proposed bill in the US would be a giant leap backward, a change in the European GMO approval process is a step forward. In many countries the GMO approval procedure is cloaked in secrecy, with data used in the decision process kept from public view. It appears that change is on the way in Europe, where the EFSA plans to provide public access to all available GMO data. Full disclosure and total transparency is certainly a move in the right direction.

The Link Between Anti-Depressants And Murder

The Link Between Anti-Depressants And Murder

Mary West, Guest Writer

Are anti-depressants over-prescribed? Do they really work? Are they dangerous to those who take them? To a society at large!

Let’s take these questions one at a time, examining the evidence.

Are Anti-Depressants Over-Used?

Anti-depressants are currently the most frequently prescribed drugs in the US, soaring by 400% over the past two decades according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Does this reflect appropriate treatment or over-medicalization? In a debate on the issue published in the January 22, 2013 issue of the online British Medical Journal, Dr. Des Spence, a Glasgow general practitioner, believes these drugs are over-prescribed due in part to the present definition of clinical depression  — experiencing low mood for a period of two weeks. He says this definition is “too loose,” noting that 75% of those who formulate these definitions have ties to the Big Pharma industry.

The Effectiveness of Anti-Depressants is a Myth

In a fascinating study published in Philosophy, Ethics and Humanities in Medicine (PEHM), researchers set out to determine if the effectiveness of anti-depressants was a myth.

Their eye-opening findings reveal the un-trustworthiness that pervades the drug review system. Although medical literature reports several hundred anti-depressant clinical trials that yielded “positive” results, the PEHM’s closer analysis shows a different story. Here is what they found:

  • Clinical trials that received negative results were either not published or were distorted.
  • The benefits were exaggerated, as positive results of a small magnitude were reported as being large.
  • The only genuine benefit of anti-depressants was found in a tiny minority of patients who had very severe depression.

The so called “evidence” supporting the effectiveness of anti-depressants did not hold up to the scrutiny of higher standards and careful examination. Researchers who had presented a rosy picture of the effectiveness of these drugs had misinterpreted the significance of statistics and manipulated the design of the studies, as well as distorted the reporting of findings and selectively picked study populations based on bias. All of these blatant breaches in ethics have nourished a myth that these drugs alleviate depression.

Anti-Depressants are the Common Denominator in Mass Shootings

A chilling link between anti-depressants and murderous violence is pointed out by Lawrence Hunter of the Social Security Institute who states, “In virtually every mass school shooting during the past 15 years, the shooter has been on or in withdrawal from psychiatric drugs.” The common denominator among the perpetrators of this violence is anti-depressants. Moreover, John Hinckley, Jr., Ted Kaczinski and the Amish school killer Charles Carl Roberts IV were all under the influence of these medications where they committed their criminal acts.

Psychiatrist Peter Breggin relates to Fox News that depression rarely leads to violence. He explains that murders and mass murders associated with depression have only occurred after the advent of a certain class of anti-depressants. Furthermore, the Physicians’ Desk Reference, which is an authoritative source of drug information, lists suicidal and homicidal ideas as hazardous side effects of these drugs.

The prevailing mindset is that anti-depressants are relatively harmless medications that elevate mood. In reality, they are mind-altering, potentially dangerous drugs that only offer a benefit to those who are very severely depressed.
