Peace. Love. Happiness. We, as human beings, sometimes spend our entire lives trying to fulfill an innate yearning for these deep-rooted emotions, which provide a unique feeling of interconnectedness that makes us feel one with nature and the universe as a whole. Unfortunately, Western culture is largely characterized by materialism, unrealistic demands from both our personal and professional lives and constant overstimulation, i.e., the need to be “plugged in” at all times.

These misguided forms of energy often lead to debilitating health conditions such as unmanageable worry, anxiety and depression. But what if there were something in nature that could help us escape from these unnatural distractions and the pain and discomfort that so often follows? Some scientists say there is, and that that something lies in the realm of psychedelics.

The featured video, “Johns Hopkins Psilocybin Project,” is a documentary produced for the Psychoactive Substances Research Collection1 at Purdue University’s library archive, which was established in 2006 through a generous gift from the Betsy Gordon Foundation.

The purpose of the research collection is to record “the history of psychoactive substances and their applications for medicine and healing.” The collection includes materials such as research notes, photographs and first-hand accounts from research participants that document “the lives and work of researchers in the field.”

Materials for this collection are typically acquired from chemists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and other researchers who have worked first-hand with psychedelic substances,” says Stephanie Schmitz, the France A. Córdova archivist.

Psychedelics and Their Benefits to Medicine and Healing

So, what exactly are psychedelics? Psychedelics, also called psychoactive substances or classic hallucinogens, include LSD (blotter), psilocybin (mushrooms), DMT (toad) and mescaline (peyote cactus). While these substances have been demonized in many Western cultures, research shows that psychedelics — when used appropriately — offer incredible medicinal benefits, including the ability to and, in some cases, permanently alleviate anxiety and depression.

Psychedelics have also shown to be helpful in reducing fear of death and anxiety in cancer patients.2When we think of important milestones in our lives, we think about falling in love, getting married or having kids, and for those who have tried it, taking LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) can be one of life’s most pivotal moments, says David E. Nichols, Ph.D., former pharmacology professor and distinguished chair in pharmacology at Purdue University.

Nichols, who retired in 2012, is considered one of the world’s leading experts on psychedelics. LSD diffuses into your brain for three to four hours, and it diffuses out — leading some to never see the world the same way again, says Nichols. This proved true for Frances Vaughan, who under carefully controlled conditions was given a high dose of LSD. Her experience was so powerful that it changed her life forever, and in a good way.

Transcendence of Time and Space

In 1965, looking for adventure and exploration, Vaughan and her husband participated in early research in psychedelics at the International Foundation for Advanced Study in Menlo Park. After passing all of the screening tests, they were given a high dose of LSD under the care of researchers. Vaughan says she’s able to discuss the memory of the experience, but struggles to put into words what it was actually like.

For Vaughan, taking LSD was a deep mystical experience that dissolved the boundaries between self and other, allowing her to feel one with everything. The self was no longer a separate entity, she says, adding that she came to a realization that truth takes many forms of expression, but in some way all traditions point to the same deep underlying reality. “I felt deep insight into several clichés, such as God is love; the truth will set you free; and love is at the heart of the universe,” she says.

The doors of perception were not only cleansed, but they disappeared altogether, says Vaughan. She also reported a feeling of transcendence of time and space, a sense of interconnectedness with all things, gratitude, peace, love and the opening of her heart.

Vaughan was so moved by the experience that she went on to become a pioneer in the field of transpersonal psychology,3 a practice characterized as an attempt to understand the different states of consciousness (and varying views of reality) that were revealed through experimentation with psychedelics. She went back to school to study psychology and become a psychotherapist before writing a book on intuition, titled “Awakening Intuition,”4 — a publication considered breakthrough research at the time it was published in 1979.

Most of the World’s Cultures Use Psychedelics for Healing and Spiritual Maturation

Arguably, one of the biggest downfalls in Western medicine, and Western culture in general, is its over-concentrated focus on the ordinary, waking state. Western medicine pays essentially no attention to altered states, says Dr. Roger Walsh, psychiatrist, professor and co-editor of the book “Higher Wisdom.”5

Our culture is rare cross-culturally in that it doesn’t use psychedelics for healing and spiritual purposes, he adds. Meanwhile, up to 90% of the world’s cultures use altered states of consciousness and psychedelics for healing and spiritual maturation and understanding.

Angeles Arrien, Ph.D., cultural anthropologist and author of “The Four-Fold Way,”6 agrees. “Indigenous cultures have worked with plant medicines since the beginning of time,” says Arrien, adding that the drugs allow you to unveil aspects of mind that are typically hidden and inaccessible to us.

Some researchers say psychedelics align the four universal intelligences: the mind, heart, intuition or the gut and body wisdom. Others say the substances act as amplifiers, meaning they amplify your current state. James Fadiman, Ph.D., author of “The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide,”7 experienced this amplification first-hand. Like Vaughan, Fadiman came into his work after having a powerful, mystical experience with psychedelics.

He was a graduate student at Stanford University when he took a course with Professor Willis Harman, who was working with the International Foundation for Advanced Study in Menlo Park. Harman invited Fadiman to participate in a study during which he was given 200 mcg of LSD.

I put on some eye shades, laid down on the couch and listened to music,” says Fadiman. “My disinterest in spiritual things was as valid as a 10-year-old’s disinterest in sex,” he says. In other words, “it came out of a total unawareness of what the rest of the world was built on.”

During the experience, Fadiman says he went to a place where there was total aloneness and separation from the universe. But at the peak of his experience, Fadiman felt what many others have reported: feelings of gratitude, enlightenment and a new-found sense of belonging in the world.

‘LSD Wanted to Tell Me Something’ — Albert Hofmann

The story of how LSD was first discovered is quite remarkable. It all began with Albert Hofmann, one of the greatest pharmacologists of the 20th century. Hofmann discovered and synthesized tens of thousands of substances. When he first tested LSD — created from ergot, a fungus that forms on rye — on animals, it produced uninteresting results, causing only mild irritation in the animal.

But in 1943, Hofmann reported having a very curious feeling about the chemical, so he resynthesized it. A few hours later, Hofmann said he had an unusual experience and assumed he must have somehow been exposed to the substance. But he wasn’t sure how because he knew if he was exposed, it was to a very minuscule amount.

To find out if his symptoms were caused by this particular substance, Hofmann synthesized another batch and deliberately took 250 mcg, which today we understand is a massive dose of psychedelics. It was then that he found himself having the world’s first psychedelic trip.

Hofmann proceeded to ride his bicycle home. He was feeling very unusual and at one point even thought he was dying, so a friend called a doctor, who said Hofmann’s blood pressure was a little high and his eyes dilated, but other than that was fine. Strangely, Hofmann’s experience, which was initially painful and terrifying, turned into a wonderful one.

LSD wanted to tell me something. It gave me an inner joy, an open mindedness, gratefulness, open eyes and an internal sensitivity for miracles of creation,” said Hofmann. Incredibly, out of the tens of thousands of compounds Hofmann synthesized, there was only one that failed animal testing that he resynthesized, and that was LSD. Hofmann lived to be 102 years old, passing away in 2008 just 10 days after the 55th anniversary of his first acid trip.8

Using Psychedelics to Alleviate Fear of Death in Cancer Patients

Another pioneer in the field of psychedelics is Stanislav Grof, a psychiatrist from Czechoslovakia who treated mentally disturbed patients with mystical experiences to improve mental health. He was also one of the firsts to use psychedelic medicine for the dying. The New York Times reports:9

“Grof kept careful notes of his many psychedelic sessions, and in his various papers and books derived from those sessions, he described cancer patients clenched with fear who, under the influence of LSD or DPT, experienced relief from the terror of dying — and not just during their psychedelic sessions but for weeks and months afterward.

Grof continued his investigations into psychedelics for the dying until the culture caught up with him — the recreational use of drugs and the reaction against them leading to harsh antidrug laws.”

Grof conducted more experiments than anyone else, conducting trials with more than 1,000 subjects. He also helped create a new understanding of the human psyche by synthesizing reports from thousands of people from around the world. Grof created a new map of the human mind pointing to its many layers and the fact that psychedelics are unique in their ability to unveil the depths of the human psyche.

Research into the health effects of psychedelics began in the 1950s, but came to an abrupt stop in the 1970s, mainly due to the media’s focus on the substances’ damaging, rather than the positive, effects. However, as noted in the film, the demonization also had a political and cultural dimension to it.

People who took psychedelics had a major shift in their values. In some ways, the shifts ran counter to society’s obsession with materialism and capitalism, calling those values into question, which the government perceived as a threat. Overnight, all legitimate research was shut down, and only recently have labs received approval to start it back up again. As Fadiman puts it:

“It’s turning around because the generation that passed all these repressive laws (banning psychedelic research) that sent people to jail for working on their own minds, are passing away or out of power. And the people coming into power are part of the 23 million people who experienced psychedelics. They are no longer preventing medicine and science and psychology from exploring these materials because they personally are no longer frightened.”

Study: Low-Dosing Psychedelics Enhance Problem Solving

Before the research was halted in the 1970s, Harman pursued his belief that psychedelics could be used to focus the part of the mind that’s interested in hard-nose scientific problem solving, not mysticism or psychotherapy, just science. Harman conducted a study of scientists, who in order to receive approval to participate in the study, had to have a problem they cared about deeply but could not solve, despite working on it for several months.

The participants were given a lower dose than those who had mystical experiences. The results from the first group showed that it had worked — most of the participants felt that they had made a huge step forward, developed a new way of looking at the problem or had a solution. Some even went on to have their products developed.

The study seemed to yield successful results, but during the seventh or eighth trial, Harman and his team received a letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration saying the research had been cancelled. The scientists were shocked. The government had shut down all research in the U.S., which at that time included about 60 projects, according to the film.

Studies Support Controlled, Clinical Use of Psilocybin

In addition to LSD, psilocybin or magic mushrooms have also been found to alleviate anxiety, depression and fear of death in cancer patients. Unfortunately, psilocybin, like marijuana and LSD, is classified as a Schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Substances Act.10

The mushrooms are typically ingested in their fresh or dried form, or can be made into tea. Large doses have been known to induce panic and/or psychosis. On the other hand, research shows it can also have the opposite effect — providing long-lasting relief from anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, being a Schedule 1 drug, obtaining scientific support for its medicinal use is extremely difficult and costly.

In 2014, London-based psychiatrist James Rucker penned a commentary in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), arguing for the reclassification of LSD and magic mushrooms — which he notes are far less addictive and harmful than heroin and cocaine — in order to make it easier to conduct much needed medical research on them. According to Rucker:

“Hundreds of papers, involving tens of thousands of patients, presented evidence for their use as psychotherapeutic catalysts of mentally beneficial change in many psychiatric disorders, problems of personality development, recidivistic behavior, and existential anxiety.”

Clinical Trials Demonstrate Remarkable Benefits of Magic Mushrooms

In a Time magazine article, Dinah Bazer recounts her personal experience with psilocybin. A cancer survivor struggling with severe anxiety (driven by her fear of a recurrence), Bazer agreed to participate in a magic mushroom trial conducted at the NYU Langone Medical Center. While fear gripped her when the drug first brought her “tumbling through space,” the experience ended up being a profoundly healing one:

“I started to feel love. I felt like I was being bathed in love and it was overwhelming, amazing, wonderful … The feeling of immense love lingered for weeks, and four years later I still feel it at times. My fear and anxiety were completely removed, and they haven’t come back …

The experience changed how I wanted to live my life. I used to get up, grab a quick snack and eat it in the car. But I no longer want to be in a hurry. Now I get up an hour early, make a real breakfast and read my paper … I used to imagine what it would be like if the cancer recurred, but I don’t think about it the same way anymore. When I don’t feel well and thoughts of a recurrence creep into my mind, I lack fear and simply think, ‘Let’s just see what happens.’”

As noted in the film, an appropriate setting is key for using mushrooms to treat anxiety and depression in cancer patients. During studies at Johns Hopkins University, volunteers remained in the presence of two guides throughout the psilocybin session. They were also provided aftercare.

Participants came out of the study reporting a new feeling of centeredness that allowed them to be more accepting of the fact that they might be dying. Several participants went on to tell their loved ones that everything was going to be OK — an immensely comforting statement for caretakers of terminally ill cancer patients.

Treating Anxiety and Depression Naturally

While research supports the notion that psychedelics offer many healing capabilities, the substances are not for everyone. People with severe mental illness or those who are frightened or distrustful do not make good candidates. Nevertheless, some 23 million Americans report that they use or have used psychedelics. Because psychedelics are illegal in the U.S., the substances are inaccessible for those suffering from anxiety or depression. Fortunately, there are many other nontoxic remedies that are effective for treating these ailments.

In addition to the creation of new neurons, including those that release the calming neurotransmitter GABA, exercise boosts levels of potent brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, which may help buffer some of the effects of stress. Many avid exercisers also feel a sense of euphoria after a workout, sometimes known as the “runner’s high.” It can be quite addictive, in a good way, once you experience just how good it feels to get your heart rate up and your body moving.

Other Antidepressive Lifestyle Strategies

Your gut also plays an important role in your mental state. Your gut and brain work in tandem, each influencing the other. This is why your intestinal health can have such a profound influence on your mental health and vice versa. It’s also the reason why your diet is so closely linked to your mental health.

Prior research has shown that the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus had a marked effect on GABA levels in certain brain regions and lowered the stress-induced hormone corticosterone, resulting in reduced anxiety- and depression-related behavior. The probiotic known as Bifidobacterium longum NCC3001 has also been shown to normalize anxiety-like behavior in mice with infectious colitis.

So, optimizing your gut flora with beneficial bacteria is a highly useful strategy. This is done by eliminating sugars and processed foods and eating plenty of non-starchy vegetables, avoiding processed vegetable oils, and using healthy fats. Additionally, eating plenty of fermented vegetables or taking a high-potency probiotic would be useful to re-establish healthy gut flora.

Your diet should also include a high-quality source of animal-based omega-3 fats, like anchovies, sardines, wild-caught Alaskan salmon or krill oil. The omega-3 fats EPA and DHA play an important role in your emotional well-being, and research has shown a dramatic 20% reduction in anxiety among medical students taking omega-3s.

Ego: The Artificial Intelligence Of This World

Jiulio ConsiglioGuest Writer

If you’re really ready to break out of the matrix that has enveloped this world, this article may be for you. This world, or perhaps I should say this realm, was blanketed long ago with a false consciousness, an artificial intelligence, if you will. This false consciousness is what has conditioned the masses for thousands of years and it is the egoic consciousness of past and future. This false program is what has been the source of separation between us all as well as the source of separation between us and Source Energy. We have been divided, and purposefully so, by race, gender, politics, religion, beliefs and so on.

What makes this consciousness false or artificial, is the reality of the present moment, the eternal moment of now. Reflect on the following: when you experience the past, does it not come in memories and images? And what about the future? Is the future not projected thoughts and emotions? And lastly, can you not see the instability and ever-changing nature of this thought system? This article has one intention and that’s to wake you up-to reveal to you how to break free of this matrix and its artificial intelligence program.

Let’s take a closer look at egoic consciousness and how it programs a mind. The ego operates between the past and future. Nothing wrong with this, because until you experience that which is false, you cannot fully understand and appreciate that which is real. This program operates on a continuous cycle of suffering noticed or not, by having one focus on the past and then project that awareness into the future. It’s an endless cycle of wash, rinse, repeat. And because of that, it prevents one from experiencing new realities, greater experiences and higher dimensions of consciousness.

Now let’s look at the nature of this artificial intelligence. Even though it’s a program, it is spiritual in nature. We are spiritual beings and even matter is made up of mind stuff. This made-up intelligence serves a divine purpose and that is to awaken humanity to their true spiritual nature and their true intelligence-the inner being or soul within. What is this artificial intelligence at its core? It’s the idea of separation. From this one idea, this one thought, came countless branching beliefs. And from those beliefs arose emotions like fear, anger, hate, jealousy as well as feelings of having to compete, inferior and superior complexes and so on.

If you read my last article, I describe how the ego is the bringer of light. It is the darkness blanketing this planet and blanketing the individual consciousness from realizing the light within. In other words, the ego, this artificial intelligence that surrounds this earth and that has embedded itself in virtually every aspect of humanity is Lucifer or Satan itself. Now knowing this and understanding this should reveal to you the truth: you are the light. You are an extension of Source Energy. You are an individual aspect of God and yet you are one with everything and everyone. You are not your past, you are not your future, you are not fear, you are not your thoughts or emotions. You are the silent witness, the Christed awareness experiencing these mind constructs, these emotions. You are the light that you have been seeking. Your very own awareness is God. And enlightenment is the awareness of your inner being; it’s the awareness of the Greater Awareness, your Highest Self, Source Energy.

I will now offer you insights and ways to propel you forward in your own awakening, which will be the activation of the third eye, the brow chakra. The third eye is a reality and when activated, will reveal the truth to you directly in the experience of oneness through inner stillness, a quiet mind. Being the seat of clarity, you will be able to discern what is true and what is artificial; what is real and what is fake. From this awakened state you will be able to tune into higher frequencies and wisdom to help guide you on your spiritual journey.

The world is ready for and in need of more masters. Your life has a much greater purpose that you could ever imagine. You are here to wake up; from the dream of thought and the artificial intelligence that created it. The ego is not real relative to your inner stillness. This matrix we are living in is not real relative to the spiritual realm. The only reality is Who You Are relative to Source Energy. Reality is unchanging, unmovable and cannot be altered. And it is within your inner being, the Highest Self, that you will remember or re-join reality.

Here are some higher dimensional insights that will assist in your awakening process:

•    The present moment is all there ever is. Everything that has happened or will happen is so in this one wholly instant. Reflect on this, meditate on this and allow yourself to be guided to this powerful understanding. Nothing outside of the now has any reality. The past and future are mind constructs, reflections of artificial intelligence.

•    When faced with thoughts of fear or worry you have a choice; you can react or you can respond by observing. When you react to an automatic negative thought, you feed the ego. And in order to begin to break its hold on your consciousness, one has to starve it energetically. By observing you begin to bring awareness into the picture. And that awareness is your very own Self.

•    Contemplate surrendering. In the surrendered state, there is no longer any resistance within you. Going within and saying to Source, “I am letting go, guide me” has unimaginable potential. It signals to your Highest Self that you are ready to make a shift, a shift in awareness or consciousness.

It is my hope that this article has been enlightening and has offered you insight into this world and the true nature of reality. A thousand blessings on your spiritual journey!

Scientists Achieve Real-Time Communication With Lucid Dreamers

Lucid Dreamers

Paul SeaburnGuest Writer

Are you a lucid dreamer – one of those lucky (or perhaps not) people who has realized they are dreaming and been able to affect the events in a dream? Have you ever wondered if a lucid dreamer could give you a play-by-play of the dream they’re experiencing – filling you in on the scary, puzzling or possibly the details of the dream – and perhaps even take suggestions for ways to alter, enhance or come out of the dream? So have scientists at Northwestern University, but, unlike you, they’ve actually been able to accomplish this for the first time.

“It’s amazing to sit in the lab and ask a bunch of questions, and then somebody might actually answer one. It’s such an immediately rewarding type of experiment to do. You don’t have to wait to analyse your data or anything like that. You can see it right there while they’re still sleeping.”

That ‘somebody’ is a lucid dreamer in the lab of Karen Konkoly, a PhD student at Northwestern University and first author of the paper published in Current Biology describing a study of lucid dreamers and how much they can do in a dream. As she tells Vice in an interview, quite a lot. The researchers’ initial surprise was that talking to a person in a lucid dream did not wake them up. Nor did it confuse them while in the dream, and – unlike the mumbling sounds most people make when trying to talk while dreaming – their conversations with the researchers were clear and lucid.

“We found that individuals in REM sleep can interact with an experimenter and engage in real-time communication. We also showed that dreamers are capable of comprehending questions, engaging in working-memory operations, and producing answers.”

As senior author Ken Paller describes in a press release, the dreamers could even help with the experiments. The study involved 36 people in four different labs around the world – some who were experienced lucid dreamers, others who hoped to become one and one person with narcolepsy and lucid dreams. They were given a signal to make to the researchers – a specific left-right eye movement – and then went to sleep attached to REM monitors. Once in REM (as verified by the signal), the experiments began. Here’s a description of one involving a 19-year-old American who had previous lucid dreams.

“He received sound cues during a 90-min daytime nap, near the beginning of a period of REM sleep. He indicated that he was in a lucid dream with a series of three left-right eye movements (termed LRLRLR). Then we presented a spoken math problem: 8 minus 6. Within 3 s, he responded with two left-right eye movements (LRLR) to signal the correct answer 2. The math problem was then repeated, and he again produced the correct answer. Note that participants were instructed to make rapid eye movements with a maximal horizontal scan, yielding EOG signals (as in this case) that strikingly stand out from typical eye movements during REM sleep.”

5 Easy Tricks to have a Lucid Dream tonight that don’t involve meditation. Click here to read the article.

The study gives similar successes from all four labs, each of which conducted the experiments differently. About 18% of the participants were successful. When they awoke, many of them said they remembered the questions, which they described as seeming like a voice-over narration or a voice coming over a loudspeaker.

Does this sound like fun? Konkoly is already planning new experiments – comparing cognitive abilities during dreams versus wake; verifying the accuracy of post-awakening dream reports; helping people with sleep problems or who suffer from nightmares. If you’re interested, the Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at Northwestern University has an Android phone app and instructions for participating in lucid dream experiments remotely.

Sweet dreams!

How Changing Your Thoughts Changes Your Life

Published

on

Paul LendaGuest Writer

How many thoughts do you have every day? How many of these thoughts are ones you are consciously aware of? How many of them are helpful to you or others? How many of them are harmful? Taking this path of self-inquiry can help you perform a “thought audit” where you assess whether your current life circumstances are being improved or worsened by your thoughts.

Self-responsibility is the mark of an evolved person who takes ownership of the way they feel and what they experience. Your thoughts are the most powerful form of energy in the multiverse. They can create something from nothing, which is a remarkable feat when you think about it. Everything you see in the world that is both tangible and intangible emerged out of thoughts. You can also expand this out on a macrocosmic scale and say that the Earth, solar system, galaxy, universe, and multidimensional multiverse were also created thanks to conscious creative thoughts.

The famous Indian yogi Paramahansa Yogananda once said, “Since you alone are responsible for your thoughts, only you can change them.” This understanding of self-responsibility holds the power to change both how you feel and what you experience. Every thought you have is either bringing you closer to something helpful or harmful.

Rather than this something terrible, it’s actually extraordinary and remarkable. It means that the power is completely within you to experience life the exact way you want to. reality is incredibly malleable, and you have quite a lot of say on what you experience.

Think of yourself as being a magnet. In fact, your body is a massive electromagnet, with your heart and brain being the two largest electromagnetic fields within your toroidal energy system. By being a magnet, you are attracting your experience by whatever your dominant thoughts are. Resonance is a fundamental dynamic of Reality, and there is always a push for things to get into resonance with one another. That is why if you are angry for an extended people of time, you will find resonance with other elements and aspects of reality (people, environments, health, etc.) that resonate at the sort of energy that state of consciousness matches most closely. You will attract whatever is in harmony with the most dominant thoughts you have.

Your Thoughts Are Magic Spells

Treat your thoughts as if they were spells of magic, replicating in the real world from the garden of your mind. You are the magician who can cast spells that benefit you and others, or become a sorcerer who casts spells that harm you or others. Getting more mindfully conscious about what thoughts emerging in your mind will help you have more control over your magic.

Anything we experience in life is something we tend to categorize as being either good or bad. However, as with the ancient Chinese parable of the old man who lost his horse, this is a judgment we make that does not necessarily reflect the truth. Something that may happen to us may seem “bad” but it actually leads to something that we then see as being very good. The same holds true as well.

If we stay more centred and observe things that happen in our lives and the world from a more neutral heart space, we can avoid adding creative thought energy to something, which makes it bigger, before we deeply understand what the best use of our thoughts is.

How to open your Third Eye and never be fooled again. Click here to read the article.

An ancient Greek stoic philosopher named Epictetus once said, “We are disturbed not by what happens to us, but by our thoughts about what happens.” This is very true, and you probably have seen that in your life. A situation may appear positive or negative but it may actually result in a different outcome. If it does, we will see that we helped co-create something that was worse for us because we were in a reactive state and used our thoughts to attract something we later realized wasn’t for the best. Fear-based thoughts often lead to that sort of outcome.

Change your thoughts and you change your life. Stay centred and observe the world from a neutral space, you are better equipped to use your thoughts in a more helpful way. Realize the extraordinary power you hold and wield it for the good of you and of all.

Reincarnation has remained on the fringe of scientific inquiry for a long time, despite a number of scientists urging the mainstream community to research it further — and for good reason. Decades ago, American astronomer and astrobiologist Carl Sagan said that “there are three claims in the (parapsychology) field which, in my opinion, deserve serious study,” with one being “that young children sometimes report details of a previous life, which upon checking turn out to be accurate and which they could not have known about in any other way than reincarnation.”

This topic falls into the ever-growing study of non-material sciences. At the end of the nineteenth century, physicists discovered something that could not be explained by classical physics. This led to the development of quantum mechanics, which has now proven that the material foundations of our world are not the real foundations we think they are. Quantum mechanics suddenly introduced the mind into its conceptual structure, because all of the results coming from quantum mechanics suggest that the physical world is no longer the primary or sole component of reality.

“Despite the unrivalled empirical success of quantum theory, the very suggestion that it may be literally true as a description of nature is still greeted with cynicism, incomprehension and even anger.”

– T. Folger, “Quantum Shmantum”; Discover 22:37-43, 2001

The quote below is from Dr. Gary Schwartz, a professor of psychology, medicine, neurology, psychiatry, and surgery at the University of Arizona. He and a number of other sciences explain these concepts in their Manifesto for a Post-Materialist Science:

The ideology of scientific materialism became dominant in academia during the 20th century. So dominant that a majority of scientists started to believe that it was based on established empirical evidence, and represented the only rational view of the world. Scientific methods based upon materialistic philosophy have been highly successful in not only increasing our understanding of nature but also in bringing greater control and freedom through advances in technology. However, the nearly absolute dominance of materialism in the academic world has seriously constricted the sciences and hampered the development of the scientific study of mind and spirituality. Faith in this ideology, as an exclusive explanatory framework for reality, has compelled scientists to neglect the subjective dimension of human experience. This has led to a severely distorted and impoverished understanding of ourselves and our place in nature.

When it comes to reincarnation specifically, it directly relates to the study of consciousness — something that Max Plank  regarded as “fundamental” in relation to quantum mechanics. In fact, Eugene Wigner, another Nobel Prize winning scientist/mathematician, once told the world that “it was not possible to formulate the laws of quantum mechanics without reference to consciousness.”

The Scientific Study of Reincarnation

University of Virginia psychiatrist Jim Tucker is arguably the world’s leading researcher on this topic, and in 2008, he published a review of cases that were suggestive of reincarnation in the Journal Explore.

A typical reincarnation case, described by Jim, includes subjects reporting a past life experience. The interesting thing is that 100% of subjects who report past life remembrance are children. The average age when they start remembering their past life is at 35 months, and their descriptions of events and experiences from their past life are often extensive and remarkably detailed. Tucker has pointed out that these children show very strong emotional involvement when they speak about their experiences; some actually cry and beg their parents to be taken to what they say is their previous family.

According to Tucker, “The subjects usually stop making their past-life statements by the age of six to seven, and most seem to lose the purported memories. This is the age when children start school and begin having more experiences in the current life, as well as when they tend to lose their early childhood memories.”

There are many of these strange cases, and you can check out more in an article we previously published about six of them here: 6 Extraordinary Cases of Kids Who Remember Their Past Lives.

This Case

This article, however, focuses on a different case. And it starts with a doctor named Eli Lasch, a prominent physician in Israel who served as a senior consultant in the coordination of health services in the Gaza Strip. He passed away in 2009, but before he did, he was investigating a supposed reincarnation case in which a three-year old boy claimed to have remembered a past life. In this life, he remembered being struck by a big blow to the head with an axe, and having a long, red birthmark on his head.

The present-day boy, whose name remained confidential throughout the entire study, also had a birthmark in the exact same spot, which is interesting because multiple studies, like the one published in Explorepoint out how shared birthmarks are common to children who remember their past lives.

You can see more examples of this in this article.

The boy’s father and a number of other relatives in the village decided to visit neighbouring communities to see if his past life identity could be established and Dr. Lasch was invited to join. On this journey, they visited multiple villages until the boy remembered the right one. He remembered his own first and last name, as well as the first and last name of his murderer.

According to the Institute for the Integration of Science, Intuition, and Spirit. I am not able to retrieve the source, as it appears to have been removed, but I will leave the text here with another reference at the bottom of this quote.

A member of this community, who had heard the boy’s story, said that he had known the man that the boy said that he was in the past lifetime. This man had disappeared 4 years earlier and was never found. It was assumed that this person must have come to some misfortune as it was known that individuals were killed or taken prisoner in the border areas between Israel and Syria for being suspected of being spies.

The group went through the village and at one point the boy pointed out this past life house. Curious bystanders gathered around and suddenly the boy walked up to a man and called him by name. The man acknowledged that the boy correctly named him and the boy then said:

“I used to be your neighbour. We had a fight and you killed me with an ax.”

Dr. Lasch then observed that this man’s face suddenly became white as a sheet.  The 3-year-old than stated:

“I even know where he buried my body.”

The boy then led the group, which included the accused murderer, into fields that were located nearby. The boy stopped in front of a pile of stones and reported:

“He buried my body under these stones and the ax over there.”

The boy’s full story has been documented in the book, “Children Who Have Lived Before: Reincarnation Today” by German therapist Trutz Hardo. Excavation at the spot under the stones revealed the skeleton of an adult man wearing the clothes of a farmer, and on the skull, they observed a linear split consistent with an axe wound. In 1998, Dr. Lasch related this case history to Trutz Hardo,.

What Happens When We Die? Where Does “Consciousness” Go?

The amount of research that’s emerged in the fields of parapsychology (ESP, telepathy, remote viewing), quantum physics, reincarnation, near death experiences, out of body experiences, consciousness, and non-material science in general is truly overwhelming. If you want to learn more about these topics, you can sift through our website, as we’ve published countless articles in this area, or visit places like the Institute of Noetic Sciences and start your research there.

Personally, I think there are multiple paths we take after “death.” Some may reincarnate on this planet or onto another planet, and some may go to an entirely different plane of existence altogether. There is ample evidence to support both points, from ancient history and religion to consciousness studies (like reincarnation and near death experiences) and more. All the evidence points to the idea that this human experience, and our physical body, do not represent either the end or the beginning of our journey.
