Many of us understand the importance of consuming organic foods and making detoxification a regular part of our health routine. Creating a healthy home environment is also part of the detoxification/clean living process. After learning about the health hazards of dryer sheets and toxic cleaning products, you may have already eliminated these products from your home. But what about your bedroom? After all we do spend one third of our lives sleeping, yet often times this is the room that is neglected.

Creating a clean (non-toxic) bedroom can be a financial challenge, so starting small is the easiest solution. Every change you can make will have a positive impact on your health. How you begin is a personal decision based on your budget and health issues. Some people begin with replacing their mattress, others an air cleaner or bedding.

Creating A Healthy Bedroom
1. Replace Your Bedding with Organic Materials

Replace or remove all artificial fabrics from your bedding. Start with pillows and pillow cases, gradually working your way through the sheets, mattress and bed frame (if it’s made from artificial products such as particle board or MDF, see suggestion #5 below). Many people make the mistake of assuming that cotton is a safer choice than synthetics, but the fact is that cotton uses 25% of the world’s insecticides and over 14% of its pesticides.  As you can afford it, replace your bedding with organic materials.

2. Replace or Remove Artificial Clothes in Your Closet

The reality is that synthetic materials such as acrylic, nylon, and polyester are made from thermoplastics. These fabrics out gas plastic molecules whenever they are heated. [1] If you wear wrinkle free clothes you’re breathing in plastic and formaldehyde. Remember that you also absorb these chemicals directly through your skin.

The base for most synthetic fabrics is a liquid made from coal, oil, or natural gas. [3] The liquid is forced through the fine holes of a nozzle, called a spinneret. As the liquid emerges from the holes, it is cooled so that it solidifies to form tiny threads. These threads are woven together to make fabric.  To make these clothes more durable Perfluorochemicals (PFCs), including Teflon is added to fabric to offer wrinkle and stain resistant qualities.  Look for clothing made of natural or organic materials. To learn more about synthetic clothes click here.

3. Remove Faux-Fabric Furniture

If you have any furniture in your bedroom, such as a chair that is artificial leather, it shouldn’t be in your bedroom or any room in your house for that matter. You may be surprised to learn that Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is often used in synthetic leather. PVC is widely regarded as the most dangerous of all plastics. It is made more flexible with the use of toxic plasticizers—typically phthalates, which are known endocrine disruptors. Throw pillows and seating cushions that are stain and water resistant have been sprayed with chemicals that are toxic. If the fabric is a cotton/polyester blend it was most likely treated with formaldehyde, and softened with ammonia. [2] Replace these when you can with organic or natural material.

4. Remove Particle Board and MDF

If you have any furniture that is made of particle board, MDF or melamine, it shouldn’t be in your house, especially your bedroom. MDF is made with shredded wood that has been softened and powdered. The powder is combined with resins and other bonding agents and compacted into solid boards. The chemical that causes the most concern is formaldehyde, which can aggravate asthma and other lung conditions, irritate mucous membranes, and cause contact dermatitis. [5]

Like MDF, particle board contains formaldehyde, a known carcinogen that has been directly linked to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (throat cancer) in people. The chemical can also cause headaches, allergies, nausea and a burning sensation in the throat.

According to TLC, How Stuff Works, within two months, particle board decreases its toxicity by about 25%. By the end of the first year, particle board is only half as potent as it was new. It levels off from there and can take up to ten years to run completely out gas. [5]

Look for solid wood furniture at furniture stores, flea markets and yard sales. Glass and metal end tables and desks generally work well as they don’t outgas and are easily wiped down.

5. Remove Accent / Throw Rugs

Wood or tile floors are easiest to clean and better options for allergy/asthma and MCS sufferers. While small accent or area rugs may look nice in your bedroom, they hold onto dirt, dust mites and other allergens. If you can, omit rugs and carpet. Almost all polyester is manufactured with antimony, a carcinogen that is toxic to the heart, lungs, liver, and skin. [4] Many carpets are also made of olefin (polypropylene). Nylon, which is petroleum based synthetic fibre invented in the 1930’s by Dupont and is common in rugs.

6. Use ‘No VOC’ Paint

If you decide to paint a room use No VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint. VOCs are unstable, carbon-containing compounds that easily vaporize into the air. When they enter the air, they react with other elements to produce ozone, which causes air pollution and a host of health issues including breathing problems, headache, burning, watery eyes and nausea. [6]

7. Shoe Free Zone

Consider making your home a shoe free zone. Have indoor and outdoor shoes to avoid tracking in pollen, dirt and chemicals from outdoors in. You can also purchase a shoe or boot tray to keep by your door. When you come in from outdoors simply place your shoes in the tray to minimize dirt, pollen, dust and chemicals from being tracked into your house.

8. Minimize Electrical Devices

If you have a computer, TV or other electronic devices in your bedroom, you may consider moving them into another room. Electronic devices emit radiation that can disturb a peaceful night of sleep by disrupting sleep patterns. Switch out your digital alarm clock to a battery operated alarm clock.

9. Replace or Cover Your Mattress

This is the most difficult step as it is cost prohibitive for many people. The reality is that conventional mattresses are sprayed with flame retardant and stain resistant chemicals. Many mattresses are made of foam that can outgas for years. There are many sources for organic mattresses at local stores and online. Wherever you shop be aware of green washing. If you can’t afford to replace your mattress, you may consider wrapping it in a foil barrier cloth available at www.afs-foil.com. They also sell a foil tape to seal the edges. I found the tape to have a strong smell, although it does evaporate in 3-4 days.  If you are chemically sensitive, have someone else do this for you.

10. Buy an Air Cleaner

If you can afford a whole house air cleaner, they are a wonderful investment. Do your research; there are a lot to choose from. For many people a portable air cleaner that can be moved from room to room is a wonderful option. Look for one with HEPA filtration, and be sure that whatever you buy does not produce ozone. Some air cleaning companies will even custom blend their charcoal filters for specific need such as allergy/asthma, smoke, MCS etc.

11. Remove Chemically Treated Drapes or Shades

Drapes and shades hide dust, pollen, and other allergens. If you can remove drapes and shades and replace them with organic fabric drapes and shades. If the cost is prohibitive, consider bartering with a friend who can sew curtains or drapes for you. Wood blinds may also be an option for some individuals. If you are building a new home or remodelling you may consider blinds that are in between the glass, no out gassing, and no weekly cleaning!

Follow The Money In “Sick-Care”: What’s Behind The Drugs And Needles?

Follow The Money In “Sick-Care”: What’s Behind The Drugs And Needles?

Raluca SchachterContributing Writer

“The description of the disease seems to change according to the drug that’s being marketed.” – Ray Peat, PhD

There are several “scams” in the “health”-care industry these days, that brainwash the population into believing the “cure” comes through a pill, or a needle and “donations” should be offered for researching more of such “cures”.

Cholesterol medication is one of these “scams” that are supposedly meant to fight heart disease. The good and bad cholesterol” theory was developed by an opportunistic big pharma industry that needed just another way to make huge profits. Studies and “scientific evidence” were simply bought to “prove” their false theories. But the evidence against this damaging medication couldn’t be hidden for too long. A study published in the American Heart Journal in 2009 tested the cholesterol of heart attack patients admitted to 500 hospitals. The findings were shocking: 75% of those patients had LDL cholesterol levels below the current guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) of 130 milligrams! Clinical reality is that not only is a total cholesterol value greater than 200 not necessarily high, for many people it is normal and very important!

So inventing a problem that doesn’t exist, while covering up symptoms with dangerous drugs is the way these companies operate. We observe the same pattern when we talk about cancer.

The average conventional cancer treatment costs over $300,000. Yet, most natural cancer remedies costs a few thousand dollars or less and clinical reality has shown for many years that they have been very effective!

Linus Pauling, one of the most important scientists of the 20th century and 2-time Nobel Prize winner gives us something to think about when he said:

Everybody should know that the ‘war on cancer’ is largely a fraud, and that the NCI and the ACS are derelict in their duties to the American people who support them.

How about chronic fatigue syndrome? When faced with patients suffering from this disorder, in a poorly-informed attempt to relieve symptoms, most doctors might prescribe antidepressants, muscle relaxants, pain pills, or sleep medications. But none of these will resolve the condition and side effects may make you feel worse. When that happens, they will often tell you that “the disease is just in your head”…

The medical industry is working around the clock to develop new drugs and vaccines to ‘protect’ us from whatever trending epidemic is in the news. One of the latest hoaxes on the matter is the Gardasil HPV vaccine that already killed many young girls and disabled many more.

There is strong evidence that this vaccine does not prevent cervical cancer, there is no scientific evidence of any kind, nor does HPV by itself cause cervical cancer. The CDC website states that the human body’s immune system clears HPV within two years, 90% of the time. Without the vaccine. So why the push for this vaccine?

Because Merck has invested huge amounts of money and efforts to lobby governments in the U.S. and in other countries to make HPV vaccinations mandatory for young school girls, and it has vigorously maintained that Gardasil is safe. This “safety” obviously doesn’t include the figures:

Gardasil has a 400% higher rate of adverse effects than another comparable vaccine, the Menactra anti-meningitis shot.

All these facts scream loudly: MONEY. GREED. IMMORALITY.

The reality is that the magic pill or needle will never “cure” anything, but just cover up symptoms. The conventional, western model of medicine is a symptom and disease oriented approach. There is no real prevention here. Action is taken when symptoms appear and that action is mostly based on prescribing drugs for a lifetime, with serious side effects. Deep, underlying factors that determined the disease in the first place are not considered.

Where Does Your “Healthcare” Money Go?

There is no secret anymore. Big Pharma giants pay doctors and other healthcare professionals to promote their drugs. It is standard operating procedure. For a share of the huge profits, doctors become their lobbyists.

Isn’t it obvious how Big Pharma dictates their opinions about treatments?

Last year, the big pharma company Eli Lilly paid out more than $200 million in payments to doctors and healthcare providers for promoting their drugs. They also agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle criminal and civil allegations of promoting drugs for unapproved uses. Eli Lilly defrauded Medicare/Medicaid and blatantly put profit over the concern of the consumer, when they concealed the risks of its schizophrenia drug Zyprexa, knowing the serious health risks it caused. This case is not a single one, on a contrary.

ProPublica.org’s Dollars for Docs  database is tracking other companies’ disclosures as well. To give you an idea, take a look at these numbers:

Company2010 Speaker Payments2010 U.S. Sales
Lilly$61,477,547$14.3 billion
GlaxoSmithKline$52,755,793$13.6 billion
Pfizer$34,382,574$26.2 billion
AstraZeneca$31,647,101$18.3 billion
Merck$20,365,446$18.8 billion
Johnson & Johnson$11,712,900$12.9 billion
Cephalon$4,241,080$2.1 billion
ViiV Healthcare$3,975,102Unavailable

It is estimated that these required disclosures, that also expose the doctors’ names and payments will offer a transparency, which will determine physicians to rethink their strategy and back away from such arrangements.

In my opinion, no matter how you look at it, this kind of “healthcare” became a dirty business and doesn’t have anything to do anymore with re-establishing and maintaining people’s health. Because that will be so detrimental to the “business”…

No wonder they call them “drugs”…The question is: for how long will they still be legal??

What Happens In Your Body When You Suffer From Thyroid Disease?

What Happens In Your Body When You Suffer From Thyroid Disease?

Raluca SchachterContributing Writer

Have you ever wondered how can the thyroid, such a small butterfly shaped gland be responsible of so many negative symptoms that affect your entire metabolism? This happens because the thyroid functions are interconnected with each system in the organism. If the thyroid doesn’t work well, neither do you and you can’t possibly feel well.

Thyroid disease has been on the rise for the past few decades, yet many thyroid dysfunctions are not correctly diagnosed or are diagnosed too late. The thyroid hormone is found in each cell of your body and this is a major reason many experts believe the conventional way of diagnosing thyroid illnesses is not precise: measuring TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) exclusively from blood doesn’t reflect the intracellular level of the hormone. Additionally, the thyroid gland and the hormones it is utilizing don’t exist in isolation inside the organism. This is why it is necessary to evaluate the functional relationships between the thyroid and various other organs, glands and systems.

The Digestive System.

Chronic constipation is a common symptom when dealing with hypothyroidism. Thyroid dysfunction slows down the food transport in the intestines. This raises the risk for infections with pathogens in the intestines, contributes to inflammation, malabsorption and food sensitivities. The low level of gastrin determines intestinal discomfort, reflux, bloating and the low level of gastric acid determines protein deficiency.

Thyroid hormones strongly influence the tight junctions in the stomach and small intestine, which form the impermeable barrier of the digestive system. Leaky gut syndrome is a primary factor in autoimmune diseases as Hashimoto.

Studies have shown that thyroid hormones T3 and T4 protect the intestinal mucosal barrier against stress induced ulcer development. Inflammation in the digestive system reduces T3 through raising cortisol levels. Additionally, intestinal bacteria assists in transforming 20% of inactive T4 hormone into its active T3 form. Intestinal dysbiosis – the imbalance between pathogenic and beneficial intestinal flora, drastically reduces this conversion.

The Gallbladder and Liver

Hypothyroidism affects the gallbladder function through reducing bile flow. The liver metabolizes hormones, filters toxins and cleans the blood. Hypothyroidism interferes with this process and the gallbladder and liver become congested, leading to gallstones. Thyroid hormones affect the most the liver cells responsible for detoxification. At the same time, liver dysfunction will affect both thyroid function, as well as the detoxifying mechanisms of the body. A low T3 level usually reflects liver dysfunction, because the T4 – T3 conversion takes place in the liver. This can also be confirmed through analysing liver enzymes GGTP and ALT and their high level.

The Bone System

The thyroid gland produces and stores calcitonin, a regulatory hormone of calcium. Hypothyroidism interferes with the correct process of long bones formation.

Insulin and Blood Sugar

Persons with a reduced thyroid function absorb glucose slower than normal and so the cells can’t use it to produce energy. The surge of insulin produced in the insulin resistance stage accelerates the thyroid destruction in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. When the gland is destroyed, the hormone production will lower.

When the blood sugar level sinks below normal (hypoglycemia), the adrenal gland responds by secreting cortisol. This transmits to the liver to produce more glucose in order to re-establish normal levels. Unfortunately for the hypoglycemics, the constant cortisol production determined by hypoglycemic episodes suppress the pituitary gland function. This also negatively affects the thyroid.

Estrogen and Progesterone

Estrogen must first be transformed in a water soluble state in the liver in order to be eliminated from the body. During this process estradiol is made, a secondary type of estrogen. Hypothyroidism can block this process, contributing to estrogen dominance, breast cancer, uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts.

Thyroid hormones sensitize the body’s cells so that they can be available to progesterone. When receptors are not exposed to enough thyroid hormones, they lose their ability to allow progesterone to enter the cells.

Fat Burning

Hypothyroidism slows down the body’s metabolism and its ability to burn fat. Adrenal hormones that stimulate fat burning are not efficient anymore and the cells’ receptors that answer to lipase – an enzyme which metabolizes fat, are not available.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is the main source for steroid hormones formation. Cell absorption of LDL cholesterol will be reduced if there isn’t sufficient thyroid hormone in the cells. LDL will raise significantly in blood due to dysfunctional utilization of thyroid hormone. When the thyroid of a person is underworking, fat will be stored much faster than the body can burn it, which will determine high triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in blood.

Adrenal Glands

The HPT axis (hypothalamus – pituitary – thyroid) works as a feedback loop; if the thyroid is functioning well, your cells have sufficient energy. Some dysfunctions which can be involved in the imbalance of the axis are: methylation cycle dysfunction, dysfunction of the HPA axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal), nutrient deficiencies which are needed for thyroid hormone formation (selenium, zinc, iron, gluthatione, vitamin A, D, iodine) and liver dysfunctions.

Adrenal glands fall under the control of the sympathetic nervous system. The thyroid is strongly influenced by the parasympathetic nervous system. Often a person with hypothyroidism is in a dominant parasympathetic state, and so the sympathetic system is weaker. Considering the strong relation between adrenals, hypothalamus and thyroid, one can observe how the dysfunctional state of the exhausted adrenal glands can cause a cascade of problems for thyroid function.

As you can see in the below figure, glucorticoid hormones (which include cortisol) can suppress T4 – T3 conversion. So a person with a high level of cortisol (and stress) risks to suffer from low thyroid function. Additionally, the high cortisol level can result in excessive production of inactive reverse T3 (rT3), which will compete with T3 and so suppress thyroid function.

Other stress hormones like CRH produced by the hypothalamus will have an inhibitory effect on the thyroid, blocking TSH transport to the thyroid.

On top of this, if a person presents mercury toxicity and doesn’t consume a clean and correct diet for her/his metabolism, the risk of developing hypothyroidism will become even higher.

Integrative, Functional and Efficient Healing Solutions

A correct diet, proper detoxification and biochemical balance are essential aspects when addressing thyroid disorders. However there are no one-size-fits-all solutions and this is essential to remember when undertaking any healing program. No diet or treatment will work for all people the same way. Biochemical individuality is present in all body cells, and, as it happens with all illnesses, the causative factors are different in all people too.

Further, if one takes action only by suppressing negative symptoms instead of correcting the cause, then real long-term healing can’t ever be achieved. Taking thyroid medication for life won’t cause the thyroid to function better; it will only help to substitute for what the gland is not able to produce naturally anymore, and will also generate side-effects in other areas of the body.

So it’s essential to support the body’s healing in a holistic and non-invasive way. This means to determining your individual genetic, nutritional and biochemical requirements and detecting and correcting the causes of your dysfunction, rather than just “treating” the thyroid.

Understanding Cannabis Oil

Cannabis Oil

Raluca SchachterContributing Writer

Although I’ve been aware of the recent positive discussion of cannabis oil as a treatment for various serious diseases, I was still sceptical to consider this as a viable solution for certain health disorders. After all, so many people these days are looking for the perfect miracle pill to solve their health issues! Is this another panacea? Is this another way of buying into the mentality of one-size-fits-all treatments that come in a bottle without making any necessary dietary and life style changes?

In the end, it all depends on how we really make use of these extracts that nature provided us and how clearly we see the “big picture” of true healing.

So it was time I found out more! I interviewed one of my colleagues with extensive knowledge on the matter – Steven Sinay, VP of Nutritional Science for Empower Genetics and a fellow Metabolic Typing practitioner.  This article is what  he kindly shared with me on  the  very interesting topic of cannabis oil.

Understanding Cannabis Oil

Raluca Schachter: What is cannabis oil and how does it work?

Steven Sinay: Cannabis Oil is a thick, sticky, resinous substance that is extracted from the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica). Cannabis oil is a base product that is prepared by separating the resins from the cannabis flowers (buds) using a solvent extraction process. Cannabis oil contains several Cannabinoids including Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component, and Cannabidiol (CBD), the medicinal component of cannabis.

For legal purposes becoming more commonly used over Cannabis oil, is Hemp oil which is being grown in Europe to have higher levels of CBD and with no THC. In 2001, the DEA issued a rule banning all import and cultivation of industrial grade hemp. In 2003, the Hemp Industries Association filed an Urgent Motion for Stay in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2004, the Ninth Circuit Court sided with the Hemp Industries Association.

In the decision, Judge Betty Fletcher wrote, “[T]hey (DEA) cannot regulate naturally occurring THC not contained within or derived from weed-i.e., non-psychoactive hemp is not included in Schedule I. The DEA has no authority to regulate drugs that are not scheduled, and it has not followed procedures required to schedule a substance. The DEA’s definition of “THC” contravenes the unambiguously expressed intent of Congress in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and cannot be upheld.”

Judge Fletcher is essentially saying that the DEA cannot regulate hemp or the chemicals within it because hemp contains no THC, is not weed, and is therefore not covered under  the controlled substances act; and the DEA cannot regulate substances that have not been scheduled. This is why you can purchase and sell CBD hemp oil.

Over the last 20 years Cannabis has been at the center of one of the most exciting and underreported developments in recent modern science. Research on weed’s effects led directly to the discovery of an unknown biochemical communication system in the human body, the Endocannabinoid System, which plays a crucial role in regulating our physiology, mood, and everyday experience.

The discovery of receptors in the brain that respond pharmacologically to Cannabis and the subsequent identification of endogenous cannabinoid compounds in our own bodies that bind to these receptors has significantly advanced our understanding of human biology, health, and disease.

It is an established scientific fact that cannabinoids and other components of cannabis can modulate many physiological systems in the human brain and body. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that trigger cannabinoid and other receptors. More than 100 cannabinoids have been identified in the weed plant. Of these, THC and CBD have been studied most extensively. In addition to cannabinoids produced by the plant, there are endogenous cannabinoids (anandamide and 2AG) that occur naturally in the body, as well as synthetic cannabinoids created by big pharma researchers.

Cannabinoids promote homeostasis at every level of biological life, from the sub-cellular, to the organism, and perhaps to the community and beyond. Here’s one example: autophagy, a process in which a cell sequesters part of its contents to be self-digested and recycled, is mediated by the cannabinoid system. While this process keeps normal cells alive, allowing them to maintain a balance between the synthesis, degradation, and subsequent recycling of cellular products, it has a deadly effect on malignant tumour cells, causing them to consume themselves in a programmed cellular suicide. The death of cancer cells, of course, promotes homeostasis and survival at the level of the entire organism.

Scientists associated with the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS) have elucidated a number of molecular pathways whereby CBD exerts a therapeutic impact. A preclinical study by Dr. Sean McAllister and his colleagues at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reports on how CBD kills breast cancer by down regulating a gene called ID-1, which is implicated in several types of aggressive cancer. Silencing the ID-1 gene is thus is an excellent strategy for a cancer treatment.

Extensive preclinical research much of it sponsored by the U.S. Government (see U.S. Patent below) indicates that CBD has potent anti-tumoral, antioxidant, anti-spasmodic, anti-psychotic, anti-convulsive, and neuroprotective properties. CBD directly activates serotonin receptors, causing an anti-depressant effect, as well.

The United States Government holds U.S. Patent 6,630,507 (filed 1999) on Cannabinoids stating in their patent: “Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention.”

Raluca Schachter: Under what conditions has cannabis oil proved to be most successful?

Steven Sinay: According to many CBD Researchers the following are a list of conditions that the use of CBD has been shown to improve: Acne, ADD/ADHD, Addiction, AIDS, ALS, Alzheimer’s Disease, Anorexia, Antibiotic Resistance, Anxiety, Atherosclerosis, Arthritis, Asthma, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Cancer, Colitis/Crohn’s, Depression, Diabetes, Endocrine Disorders, Epilepsy/Seizure, Fibromyalgia, Glaucoma, Heart Disease, Huntington’s Disease, Inflammatory Disorders, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Kidney Disease, Liver Disease, Metabolic Syndrome, Migraines, Mood Disorders, Motion Sickness, Multiple Sclerosis, Nausea, Neurodegeneration, Neuropathic Pain, Obesity, OCD, Osteoporosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Prion/Mad Cow Disease, PTSD, Rheumatism, Schizophrenia, Sickle Cell Anemia, Skin Conditions, Sleep Disorders, Spinal Cord Injury, and Stress Stroke/TBI.

Raluca Schachter: What should we look out for, in terms of the quality of cannabis oil?

Steven Sinay: Since cannabis oil products have only been in the market place for a short period of time, it is important to source these products just as you would your produce, meat, fish, etc. As far as I can tell there are not a lot of regulatory organizations monitoring the quality and purity of these sources. Be sure to look for a product that has gone through some sort of third party lab testing that detect contaminants like pesticides, fungicides, mycotoxins, microbes, etc. Equally as important consumers need to be aware of the concentration of their medicinal cannabis.

It is fundamental in allowing the consumer to choose the correct medicine for their symptoms, as well as determining the proper dose. It’s good practice to find a manufacturer that is not afraid to allow access to each Certificate of Analysis on every batch they produce. Here in the United States a non THC CBD product is classified as a dietary supplement and is legal in all 50 states.

Raluca Schachter: The nutritional world is quite flooded with hypes these days. But as we know through Metabolic Typing ®, there is no nutrient, remedy or food that can be beneficial for everybody. Any nutrient has different effects in different metabolisms, biochemically speaking. So there are no one size fits all remedies, really. From your experience, have you had the chance to observe how this remedy had different effects in different metabolisms?

Steven Sinay: As previously mentioned, at the right dosage, CBD has been shown to significantly help with anxiety, pain, neurodegeneration, inflammation, etc. An appropriately high dosage of CBD will give you all the desired affects you need, and there is really no risk of overdose as CBD is harmless even in high concentrations. However, most people will feel little effect if they take too low a dosage, effectively wasting CBD’s powerful beneficial properties.

With the above in mind, the importance of correct CBD dosage becomes obvious. People with different requirements and different metabolisms will need accordingly different CBD dosages to experience CBD’s positive effects, and dosages can vary dramatically because there is no one-size-fits-all “typical CBD dosage.” While there is no such thing as “too much CBD,” you can in fact take too little to feel a difference. Dosage can range anywhere from 2-3 mg, up to 100 mg, 200 mg, or 500 mg to 1000 mg on the super high end. Remember, you cannot overdose and there are no reported side effects from taking high concentrations of CBD. Most people only need around 2-3 mg per day to start feeling a difference. Yet people with stronger needs may need to start at a lower dose and work their way up until they find the right dose for their body.

Raluca Schachter: What are your thoughts regarding the future of cannabis in the medical field?

Steven Sinay: This is the $64,000 Dollar Question! With our government holding a patent on several Cannabinoids, it leads one to be a little sceptical. Why? The forces that would keep cannabis illegal are vocal and very well-funded, but they are not impervious to persistent effort. The lynch pin in the War on Drugs has always been cannabis. Without the suppression and interdiction of this popular and widely used substance, there simply would not be enough “illegal drug use” going on to justify the huge amount of money and resources spent on “fighting drugs.” Once again all based on the all mighty dollar!

I feel CBD and other Cannabinoids with the persistence from those who can, and are truly benefiting from its medicinal properties, along with natural healers promoting its use, will find its place in future modern medicine. Time will tell.

Antibiotics: One of the most prescribed drugs in the modern world! The evidence that proves how harmful this practice is has been available for a while now. Taking a routine course of antibiotics and moreover pouring them into our food has led to some serious and dangerous side effects, greatly affecting human health and immunity and creating highly resistant bacteria in the process. There are instances when antibiotics can save lives, so they have their place. But switching from specific, well-determined and occasional use to a broad use and even worse, to a using antibiotics as a “preventive” measure in humans and animals, is totally insane.

Let’s look at the evidence that confirms my statements:

Antibiotics as Prescription Drugs

People became so uncomfortable these days whenever they have a sniffle or infection. They all want it to go away, right away, at any cost! Immediate relief for a life of damaged health. But common infection doesn’t equal antibiotics! Our body simply doesn’t work like that.

The whole length of our digestive tract is coated with a bacterial layer providing a natural barrier against invaders, undigested food, toxins and parasites. If this “coating” (mucosal barrier) gets damaged, well… you get the picture! These beneficial bacteria protecting the gut wall also work against invasive pathogenic micro-organisms by producing antibiotic-like substances, anti-fungal volatiles, anti-viral substances. They engage the immune system to respond appropriately to invaders. Our healthy indigenous flora has a good ability to neutralise toxic substances from our food and environment, inactivate histamine and chelate heavy metals and other poisons. Again, this is all possible IF the “barrier” is intact…Without a well-functioning gut flora, the gut wall not only becomes unprotected, but also malnourished.

The variety of functions and the essential role of an intact mucosal barrier, a healthy gut flora, make this the root of our health. We simply cannot thrive without a healthy digestive system.

What is the clinical reality these days? A vast majority of people have a damaged gut flora and a major culprit to this is: ANTIBIOTICS!

Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride offers a well-researched summary of the most common disastrous health effects which directly involve antibiotics:

  • Destroy beneficial bacteria in the human body, not only in the gut but in other organs and tissues
  • they change bacteria, viruses and fungi from benign to pathogenic, giving them an ability to invade tissues and cause disease
  • they make bacteria resistant to antibiotics, so the industry has to work on more and more powerful new antibiotics to attack these new changed bacteria. A good example is tuberculosis, where wide use of antibiotics has created new varieties of the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis resistant to all existing antibiotics
  • they have a direct damaging effect on the immune system, making us more vulnerable to infections, which leads to a vicious cycle of more antibiotics and more infections

Since babies are born with a sterile gut flora, the mother essentially “downloads her gut health / flora into the baby through breastfeeding. No wonder why digestive problems are usually shown to get worse with each generation, considering the mother’s poor gut health and bottle feeding.

Penicillins and other antibiotics with “-cillin” at the end of their name has a damaging effect on two major groups of our resident bacteria: Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. This group of antibiotics allow bacteria normally found only in the bowel to travel to the intestines, which predisposes the person to development of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and other digestive disorders.

Tetracyclines and other “-cyclines” have a particular toxic effect on the gut wall by altering protein structure in the mucous membranes, making it vulnerable to invasion by pathogenic microbes and alerting the immune system to attack the changed proteins, starting an auto-immune reaction in the body against its own gut. They also stimulate the growth of pathogenic Candida, Staphylococci and Clostridia.

Aminoglycosides (Gentamycin, Kanamycin, Erythromicin) have a devastating effect on beneficial bacteria such as physiological E.coli and Enterococci. A prolonged course of treatment with these types of antibiotics can completely eliminate such beneficial bacteria from the digestive system, leaving it open to invasion by pathogenic species of E.coli and other microbes.

Antibiotics In Food

The problem of antibiotics overuse actually grew to proportions because it comes not only from prescription drugs, but from conventional food everywhere as well! This way, we are exposed indirectly to antibiotics since we are born and their negative effects are real.

Farm animals and poultry are routinely given antibiotics, so all the products made out of these (meat, milk, eggs) will also provide us with a constant supply of antibiotics AND antibiotic resistant bacteria, developed by the animals in their bodies, together with the toxins these bacteria produce.

Many large producers of meat and poultry feed antibiotics to their healthy food animals simply to offset the effects of overcrowding and poor sanitation, as well as to promote faster growth. Every year, nearly 30 million pounds of antibiotics are sold for use in food animals. In fact, up to 70% of all antibiotics sold in the United States go to healthy food animals.

Farmed fish and shellfish have antibiotics added, as well as a lot of fruits, vegetables and grains, legumes and nuts, which are sprayed with antibiotics to control disease.

Anti-bacterial Cleaners

“Germs do not cause disease! Nature never surrounded her children with enemies. It is the individual himself who makes disease possible in his own body because of poor living habits… Do mosquitoes make the water stagnant; or does stagnant water attract the mosquitoes? We should all be taught that germs are friends and scavengers attracted by disease, rather than enemies causing disease… As their internal environment is, so will be the attraction for any specific micro-organism… The germ theory and vaccination are kept going by commercialism.” — Dr. Robert R. Gross

Modern times brought along the common belief that everything has to be disinfected and sterilized. But it’s been proven by numerous studies that  constant use of conventional sanitizers and antibacterial soaps is also killing the beneficial bacteria existent on our hands, that is meant to actually protect ourselves from disease. In other words, resistant bacteria – superbugs” – will develop, and a former common cold will morph into a much more virulent and harder to treat infection.

Facts Of Antibiotic Overuse And Solutions To An Imminent Global Danger

Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently announced the new CDC statistics on the advance of the highly drug-resistant bacteria known as CRE (carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae). The reports are frightening:

  • Healthcare institutions in 42 states have now identified at least one case of CRE.
  • The occurrence of this resistance in the overall family of bacteria has risen at least four-fold over 10 years.
  • In the CDC’s surveillance networks, 4.6% of hospitals and 17.8% of long-term care facilities diagnosed this bug in the first half of 2012.

The U.K.’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies released a report in which she calls resistance a “catastrophic threat” which poses a national security risk as serious as terrorism. She warns that unless resistance is curbed, “We will find ourselves in a health system not dissimilar to the early 19th century” in which organ transplants, cancer chemotherapy, joint replacements and even minor surgeries become life-threatening.

In March 2012, researchers published a report drawing a link between bacteria on chicken and antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs). They compared E. coli samples from animals in processing plants to the strain of E. coli that causes urinary tract infections and found chicken to be the source of the bacteria. Last summer, the story gained major traction with the release of a related study by some of the same researchers who found that retail chickens had very high levels of antibiotic-resistant E. coli; about 85% of UTI infections came from this E. Coli strain.

Another published study from Germany concluded that methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is rarely found in pigs that are raised without antibiotics. Similarly, the farmers who live and work with these pigs were less likely to have the strain of MRSA commonly associated with livestock than farmers who worked with pigs who were regularly administered antibiotics. As one of the most notorious multidrug-resistant superbugs, MRSA is responsible for an estimated 19,000 deaths and 360,000 hospitalizations each year in the United States alone.

In September 2012, researchers at Stanford University concluded that consumers eating meat and poultry raised without antibiotics are 33% less likely to contract antibiotic-resistant infections than those who eat products raised conventionally.

Considering all this, how can YOU actively participate in the change of these serious events?

…STOP taking antibiotics with the first infection, rely on NATURAL, effective, safe and powerful antibiotics with NO side effects. My favourites are raw propolis, grapefruit seed extract, oregano oil, echinacea, Manuka honey. When you really need to take a course of antibiotics, always follow with a course of probiotics, to counteract the negative effects and maintain a healthy gut flora.

…buy and eat only ORGANIC meat, eggs and dairy  or at least which hasn’t had antibiotics added (you can find this on many product labels now)

…stay clean using natural, green cleaners for your body and house, and avoid anti-bacterial soaps,  as well as harsh, toxic chemicals.

…live a healthy life, eat whole food and take responsibility of your own precious health, so you don’t end up in hospitals and long-term care facilities, which are the most exposed to never ending disease.
