8 Ways To Maximize Telomere Length And Increase Life Expectancy

Research has uncovered those shorter lengths of biological structures called telomeres are linked to mortality as well as many age-related diseases. The good news is that certain nutritional and lifestyle factors are associated with longer telomeres.

Telomeres are the portion of DNA that is joined to the ends of each of the 46 human chromosomes in cells. Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, one of the three Nobel Prize winners of 2009, has found a link between shorter lengths of telomeres and risk of diabetes, some cancers and cardiovascular disease, in addition to depression, dementia and osteoarthritis.

So does this mean we are helpless victims of these biological tyrants in the form of telomeres? No. Although the structures shorten as a person ages, research indicates that abstaining from certain practices and engaging in others may influence the lengths of telomeres. Here are some factors that may slow the shortening process.

1. Lead a Healthful Lifestyle

In 2008, scientist evaluated the effect of a healthful lifestyle on telomerase levels. Telomerase is an enzyme that plays a vital role in the maintenance of telomeres. Without adequate levels of this enzyme, telomeres become progressively shorter.

The participants in the study were requested to make several lifestyle changes, including eating a diet plentiful in whole foods, fruits and vegetables but low in refined sugar and fat. Additionally they were to regularly engage in moderate workouts, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. The healthful lifestyle caused the blood levels of telomerase to increase by 29%.

2. Consider Calorie Restriction

This practice may lessen the natural telomere shortening process that occurs over the years, says Dr. Theodore S. Piliszek of King’s College School of Medicine of the University of London.

3. Enjoy a Glass of Non-Alcoholic Red Wine Daily

A 2011 study showed resveratrol, a component of red wine, increased telomerase, which delayed the deterioration of cells. In addition, a 2012 study showed the compound increased the lifespan of mice. A daily glass on non-alcoholic red wine could be helpful.

4. Incorporate Plenty Of Fish Into Your Diet

In 2010, a study published in JAMA found that individuals with the highest level of dietary omega-3s had the lowest rate of telomere shortening, while those with the least levels had the fastest rate of telomere shortening.

5. Eat Dark Chocolate

Some studies suggest that the polyphenols contained in dark chocolate may slow telomere shortening.

6. Drink Three Cups of Tea A Day

A Chinese study in 2009 found that those who drank three cups of tea per day had significantly longer telomeres than those who drank only a small amount. Green tea has a much higher percentage of valuable nutrients called polyphenols than black tea.

7. Abstain From Smoking and Alcohol Consumption

Shorter telomeres correlate with both of these practices.

8. Deal with Stress

Some research suggests stress accelerates the telomere shortening process. Practices such as massage, exercise and relaxation techniques can help siphon off anxiety.

Follow The Money In “Sick-Care”: What’s Behind The Drugs And Needles?

“The description of the disease seems to change according to the drug that’s being marketed.” – Ray Peat, PhD

There are several “scams” in the “health”-care industry these days, that brainwash the population into believing the “cure” comes through a pill, or a needle and “donations” should be offered for researching more of such “cures”.

Cholesterol medication is one of these “scams” that are supposedly meant to fight heart disease. The good and bad cholesterol” theory was developed by an opportunistic big pharma industry that needed just another way to make huge profits. Studies and “scientific evidence” were simply bought to “prove” their false theories. But the evidence against this damaging medication couldn’t be hidden for too long. A study published in the American Heart Journal in 2009 tested the cholesterol of heart attack patients admitted to 500 hospitals. The findings were shocking: 75% of those patients had LDL cholesterol levels below the current guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) of 130 milligrams! Clinical reality is that not only is a total cholesterol value greater than 200 not necessarily high, for many people it is normal and very important!

So inventing a problem that doesn’t exist, while covering up symptoms with dangerous drugs is the way these companies operate. We observe the same pattern when we talk about cancer.

The average conventional cancer treatment costs over $300,000. Yet, most natural cancer remedies costs a few thousand dollars or less and clinical reality has shown for many years that they have been very effective!

Linus Pauling, one of the most important scientists of the 20th century and 2-time Nobel Prize winner gives us something to think about when he said:

Everybody should know that the ‘war on cancer’ is largely a fraud, and that the NCI and the ACS are derelict in their duties to the American people who support them.

How about chronic fatigue syndrome? When faced with patients suffering from this disorder, in a poorly-informed attempt to relieve symptoms, most doctors might prescribe antidepressants, muscle relaxants, pain pills, or sleep medications. But none of these will resolve the condition and side effects may make you feel worse. When that happens, they will often tell you that “the disease is just in your head”…

The medical industry is working around the clock to develop new drugs and vaccines to ‘protect’ us from whatever trending epidemic is in the news. One of the latest hoaxes on the matter is the Gardasil HPV vaccine that already killed many young girls and disabled many more.

There is strong evidence that this vaccine does not prevent cervical cancer, there is no scientific evidence of any kind, nor does HPV by itself cause cervical cancer. The CDC website states that the human body’s immune system clears HPV within two years, 90% of the time. Without the vaccine. So why the push for this vaccine?

Because Merck has invested huge amounts of money and efforts to lobby governments in the U.S. and in other countries to make HPV vaccinations mandatory for young school girls, and it has vigorously maintained that Gardasil is safe. This “safety” obviously doesn’t include the figures:

Gardasil has a 400% higher rate of adverse effects than another comparable vaccine, the Menactra anti-meningitis shot.

All these facts scream loudly: MONEY. GREED. IMMORALITY.

The reality is that the magic pill or needle will never “cure” anything, but just cover up symptoms. The conventional, western model of medicine is a symptom and disease oriented approach. There is no real prevention here. Action is taken when symptoms appear and that action is mostly based on prescribing drugs for a lifetime, with serious side effects. Deep, underlying factors that determined the disease in the first place are not considered.

Where Does Your “Healthcare” Money Go?

There is no secret anymore. Big Pharma giants pay doctors and other healthcare professionals to promote their drugs. It is standard operating procedure. For a share of the huge profits, doctors become their lobbyists.

Isn’t it obvious how Big Pharma dictates their opinions about treatments?

Last year, the big pharma company Eli Lilly paid out more than $200 million in payments to doctors and healthcare providers for promoting their drugs. They also agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle criminal and civil allegations of promoting drugs for unapproved uses. Eli Lilly defrauded Medicare/Medicaid and blatantly put profit over the concern of the consumer, when they concealed the risks of its schizophrenia drug Zyprexa, knowing the serious health risks it caused. This case is not a single one, on a contrary.

ProPublica.org’s Dollars for Docs  database is tracking other companies’ disclosures as well. To give you an idea, take a look at these numbers:

It is estimated that these required disclosures, that also expose the doctors’ names and payments will offer a transparency, which will determine physicians to rethink their strategy and back away from such arrangements.

In my opinion, no matter how you look at it, this kind of “healthcare” became a dirty business and doesn’t have anything to do anymore with re-establishing and maintaining people’s health. Because that will be so detrimental to the “business”…

No wonder they call them “drugs”…The question is: for how long will they still be legal??

Have you ever wondered how can the thyroid, such a small butterfly shaped gland be responsible of so many negative symptoms that affect your entire metabolism? This happens because the thyroid functions are interconnected with each system in the organism. If the thyroid doesn’t work well, neither do you and you can’t possibly feel well.

Thyroid disease has been on the rise for the past few decades, yet many thyroid dysfunctions are not correctly diagnosed or are diagnosed too late. The thyroid hormone is found in each cell of your body and this is a major reason many experts believe the conventional way of diagnosing thyroid illnesses is not precise: measuring TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) exclusively from blood doesn’t reflect the intracellular level of the hormone. Additionally, the thyroid gland and the hormones it is utilizing don’t exist in isolation inside the organism. This is why it is necessary to evaluate the functional relationships between the thyroid and various other organs, glands and systems.

The Digestive System.

Chronic constipation is a common symptom when dealing with hypothyroidism. Thyroid dysfunction slows down the food transport in the intestines. This raises the risk for infections with pathogens in the intestines, contributes to inflammation, malabsorption and food sensitivities. The low level of gastrin determines intestinal discomfort, reflux, bloating and the low level of gastric acid determines protein deficiency.

Thyroid hormones strongly influence the tight junctions in the stomach and small intestine, which form the impermeable barrier of the digestive system. Leaky gut syndrome is a primary factor in autoimmune diseases as Hashimoto.

Studies have shown that thyroid hormones T3 and T4 protect the intestinal mucosal barrier against stress induced ulcer development. Inflammation in the digestive system reduces T3 through raising cortisol levels. Additionally, intestinal bacteria assists in transforming 20% of inactive T4 hormone into its active T3 form. Intestinal dysbiosis – the imbalance between pathogenic and beneficial intestinal flora, drastically reduces this conversion.

The Gallbladder and Liver

Hypothyroidism affects the gallbladder function through reducing bile flow. The liver metabolizes hormones, filters toxins and cleans the blood. Hypothyroidism interferes with this process and the gallbladder and liver become congested, leading to gallstones. Thyroid hormones affect the most the liver cells responsible for detoxification. At the same time, liver dysfunction will affect both thyroid function, as well as the detoxifying mechanisms of the body. A low T3 level usually reflects liver dysfunction, because the T4 – T3 conversion takes place in the liver. This can also be confirmed through analysing liver enzymes GGTP and ALT and their high level.

The Bone System

The thyroid gland produces and stores calcitonin, a regulatory hormone of calcium. Hypothyroidism interferes with the correct process of long bones formation.

Insulin and Blood Sugar

Persons with a reduced thyroid function absorb glucose slower than normal and so the cells can’t use it to produce energy. The surge of insulin produced in the insulin resistance stage accelerates the thyroid destruction in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. When the gland is destroyed, the hormone production will lower.

When the blood sugar level sinks below normal (hypoglycemia), the adrenal gland responds by secreting cortisol. This transmits to the liver to produce more glucose in order to re-establish normal levels. Unfortunately for the hypoglycemics, the constant cortisol production determined by hypoglycemic episodes suppress the pituitary gland function. This also negatively affects the thyroid.

Estrogen and Progesterone

Estrogen must first be transformed in a water soluble state in the liver in order to be eliminated from the body. During this process estradiol is made, a secondary type of estrogen. Hypothyroidism can block this process, contributing to estrogen dominance, breast cancer, uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts.

Thyroid hormones sensitize the body’s cells so that they can be available to progesterone. When receptors are not exposed to enough thyroid hormones, they lose their ability to allow progesterone to enter the cells.

Fat Burning

Hypothyroidism slows down the body’s metabolism and its ability to burn fat. Adrenal hormones that stimulate fat burning are not efficient anymore and the cells’ receptors that answer to lipase – an enzyme which metabolizes fat, are not available.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is the main source for steroid hormones formation. Cell absorption of LDL cholesterol will be reduced if there isn’t sufficient thyroid hormone in the cells. LDL will raise significantly in blood due to dysfunctional utilization of thyroid hormone. When the thyroid of a person is underworking, fat will be stored much faster than the body can burn it, which will determine high triglycerides and LDL cholesterol in blood.

Adrenal Glands

The HPT axis (hypothalamus – pituitary – thyroid) works as a feedback loop; if the thyroid is functioning well, your cells have sufficient energy. Some dysfunctions which can be involved in the imbalance of the axis are: methylation cycle dysfunction, dysfunction of the HPA axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal), nutrient deficiencies which are needed for thyroid hormone formation (selenium, zinc, iron, gluthatione, vitamin A, D, iodine) and liver dysfunctions.

Adrenal glands fall under the control of the sympathetic nervous system. The thyroid is strongly influenced by the parasympathetic nervous system. Often a person with hypothyroidism is in a dominant parasympathetic state, and so the sympathetic system is weaker. Considering the strong relation between adrenals, hypothalamus and thyroid, one can observe how the dysfunctional state of the exhausted adrenal glands can cause a cascade of problems for thyroid function.

As you can see in the below figure, glucorticoid hormones (which include cortisol) can suppress T4 – T3 conversion. So a person with a high level of cortisol (and stress) risks to suffer from low thyroid function. Additionally, the high cortisol level can result in excessive production of inactive reverse T3 (rT3), which will compete with T3 and so suppress thyroid function.

Other stress hormones like CRH produced by the hypothalamus will have an inhibitory effect on the thyroid, blocking TSH transport to the thyroid.

On top of this, if a person presents mercury toxicity and doesn’t consume a clean and correct diet for her/his metabolism, the risk of developing hypothyroidism will become even higher.

Integrative, Functional and Efficient Healing Solutions

A correct diet, proper detoxification and biochemical balance are essential aspects when addressing thyroid disorders. However there are no one-size-fits-all solutions and this is essential to remember when undertaking any healing program. No diet or treatment will work for all people the same way. Biochemical individuality is present in all body cells, and, as it happens with all illnesses, the causative factors are different in all people too.

Further, if one takes action only by suppressing negative symptoms instead of correcting the cause, then real long-term healing can’t ever be achieved. Taking thyroid medication for life won’t cause the thyroid to function better; it will only help to substitute for what the gland is not able to produce naturally anymore, and will also generate side-effects in other areas of the body.

So it’s essential to support the body’s healing in a holistic and non-invasive way. This means to determining your individual genetic, nutritional and biochemical requirements and detecting and correcting the causes of your dysfunction, rather than just “treating” the thyroid.

Understanding Inflammation… And How To Eliminate It Naturally

One of the most common physical symptoms people suffer is inflammation. It is a sign that the body has initiated self-healing, but when inflammation is prolonged, it can result in an excessive free radical activity and tissue damage.

There are numerous mechanisms in the body which can cause inflammation and it can show up in various forms, but most of the time it directly involves a dysfunction of the digestive system – like most ailments.

The immune response is one of the main mechanisms to initiate inflammatory processes. Citokines are one of the well-studied molecules involved in the immune response, and are responsible for cellular apoptosis (cell death) and cascades of inflammatory processes. An excessive level of citokines in the body is associated with insulin resistance, diabetes and many other health problems.

Insulin, Cholesterol,  C-reactive Protein

One of the main markers of inflammation is hyperinsulinism. In medical literature this is a main factor associated with cardiovascular diseases. A high level of insulin (above 5) determines high levels of pro-inflammatory mediators and is also associated with a high level of C reactive protein, a main marker for inflammation. Studies showed that the high level of C reactive protein is also associated with high consumption of the trans fats found in processed foods.

Cholesterol has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect and a critical importance in regulating inflammation and free radical activity. A low level of cholesterol is associated with many auto-immune inflammatory conditions. As with a high cholesterol level, C reactive protein is a response to inflammation, not the cause of it. Causes are multiple and they are mainly generated by nutritional deficiencies, glucose metabolism malfunction, hyperinsulinism, toxicity and the body’s response to stress.

A level higher than 3 for this marker indicates a higher inflammation level. Analysing C reactive protein in association  with homocysteine and insulin levels is essential to properly monitor inflammation in the body.

Intestinal Dysbiosis

Medical research showed that inflammation often involves digestive function. Autoimmune diseases, for example, mostly always involve intestinal dysbiosis and other multiple chronic infections, which are often not considered in allopathic, conventional treatments. That’s why it’s essential to follow a strategy which focuses on re-establishing the digestive function and immunity, in order to normalize the inflammatory response.

Reactive foods, pathogen infections, heavy metal toxicity are also directly responsible for mucosal barrier damage and inflammation.

Processed Foods and Incorrectly Prepared Food

With the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the processing of omega 6-rich vegetable oils such as corn, soybean, canola and safflower oils – which are so abundant in our collective diet today – the balanced ratio of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids on which our human genome thrived for hundreds of thousands of years changed drastically in our diets.

These days, it is estimated that we eat one-tenth of the amount of omega 3 fatty acids required for normal functioning. This is one of the reasons why a high percentage of our modern population is susceptible to food-related health conditions like heart disease, cancer, insulin resistance and diabetesobesity, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. The elimination of toxic trans fatty acids alone could avert tens of thousands of coronary events each year, in the United States and around the world!

Disease is frequently caused by the consumption of processed foods which contain toxic and even carcinogenic substances, commercially-grown produce containing dangerous herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and rodenticides (2 billion pounds of such chemicals are used annually in the US alone!) and commercially farmed animals that are raised on steroids, antibiotics, food laden with mycotoxins (very poisonous toxins from mold and fungus) – and other toxic additives.

Cooking foods at high temperatures, crust formation when barbecuing foods, frying, etc. can generate high inflammation in the body and carcinogenic compounds named advanced glycation end products – AGEs.

Neurological Inflammation

Neurological inflammation occurs when an inflammatory cascade releases inflammatory mediators. Neurological inflammation can be a result of the overexcitation of neurons, nerve pathways in the nervous system and brain, leading to misfiring, exhaustion, and ultimately the death of these nerves.

When neurons die, chronic inflammation results, leading to poor nerve signalling and health imbalances. For example, the red swelling that surrounds a bug bite is actually the body’s inflammatory process at work. A very similar process can occur in the areas surrounding our nerves, even if we can’t see that internal process as clearly as we can the red bite on our skin’s surface. The causes which determine the process of “neurological inflammation” resulting in autism and autistic-like behaviours including ADD and ADHD is multifactorial. Without a particular combination of genetic mutations, heavy metal toxicities, chronic viral infections, underlying bacterial and fungal infections, and excitotoxin damage leading to a negative cascade of neurological events, autism, ADD/ADHD and other neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s Disease may not manifest. And the same underlying factors may also be responsible for the increase in chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia as well as the increase in mitochondrial disease.

For example, excitoxins are stimulating chemicals present now in many common foods, that over-stimulate brain chemistry via the neurotransmitters and nerve receptors. This over-stimulation can trigger nerve cell death, which results in poor signalling, contributing to “stims”, and language difficulties. Add to this all the other mentioned factors and it’s no wonder such conditions are on the rise in our society!

Dangers of Using Anti-Inflammatory Drugs: Aspirin, Ibuprofen

Commonly used anti-inflammatory medications can cause ulcers, stomach bleeding, and other gastrointestinal complications. Research shows that 80% of deaths caused by ulcers occur in patients who take anti-inflammatories, and people who follow anti-inflammatory drug therapy have a 5-10 times higher risk of developing ulcers. Moreover, these drugs can also affect the kidney and liver function, especially when used over a long period of time.

Natural Alternatives to Eliminate Inflammation Long Term

The best long-term strategy to eliminate inflammation is to ensure you provide your body with the necessary nutritional support to maintain normal biological functions. This means to first follow a clean organic diet that fits your unique metabolism. A wrong diet, even if “organic”, can quickly become a stressor for the body if it doesn’t fit to your unique genetic and biochemical requirements. It is also essential to eliminate inflammatory foods (frying, sugar, processed foods, the above mentioned vegetable oils, reactive foods like gluten and dairy, additives and other toxic, industrial substances, etc.)

Proteolytic enzymes like bromelaine, pancreatin and serrapeptase contain powerful anti-inflammatory effects. These have been shown to be efficient at inhibiting fibroids formation, fibrinogen and excessive coagulation. Serrapeptase has very beneficial effects in joint inflammation, arthritis, fibroids, excessive blood coagulation, respiratory conditions, mucus excess, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibrocystic breast disease.

A large variety of plants have an anti-inflammatory effect, plus other health benefits; some of these are boswellia, willow bark, turmeric, ginger, cloves, rosemary, holy basil, arnica, yarrow.

Anti-Inflammatory ‘Golden Milk’ Recipe!

This turmeric-based drink has its origins in Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest medical systems. It has a special earthy taste, is very rich in anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic and antioxidant properties, and naturally supports the body’s elimination (detox) and immune systems. As with any other medicinal plants, overuse or misuse can lead to negative health effects. Consume the turmeric golden milk considering your dosha and metabolic type, and most importantly, carefully observing your body’s signs and symptoms. (For more information, check out my article: Listen To Your Body. You can use a previously-boiled turmeric paste for this recipe, but it is not mandatory to gain the anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric. In my recipe, I’ll use turmeric powder.

Ingredients

•   1 and 1/2 cups milk (ie. organic, grass fed milk from cow or goat, coconut milk, home made hemp milk or almond milk)

•   1/2 – 1 tsp organic turmeric powder

•   a pinch of black pepper (to enhance turmeric absorption)

•   1/2 – 1 tsp of cinnamon, ginger, vanilla, cardamom, nutmeg (a combination of these or all of them)

•   1/2 tsp organic, raw honey (optional)

•   1/2 organic coconut oil or coconut cream (optional)

Preparation

•   Add milk together with all ingredients except honey.

•   Warm on a medium heat, without boiling.

•   Stir well and add honey at the end.

•   Drink this healthy “cocktail” with pleasure and intention!

Antibiotic Resistant Infections: The Dangers… And How You Can Avoid Them

You have probably heard about antibiotic resistant infections. But did you know that two million people per year in the US are acquiring this type of infection and 23,000 Americans per year are dying because of this?

On top of that, 250,000 people in the US require hospital care for Clostridium difficile (a unique bacterial infection directly related to antibiotic use and resistance) infections each year and 14,000 people in the US die from C. difficile infections each year.

The evidence that proves how harmful this practice can be has been available for a while now. Taking routine course of antibiotics and moreover pouring them into our food has been leading to serious and dangerous side effects, which greatly affect everybody’s health and wellbeing. There are instances when antibiotics can save lives, so they have their place. But switching from specific, well determined and occasional use to a broad use – and even worse, to a  ”preventive” measure in humans and animals – is totally insane.

Antibiotics Overuse in Medicine

Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride (Master of Medical Sciences in Neurology and Master of Medical Sciences in Human Nutrition)  offers a well-researched summary of the most common disastrous health effects which directly involve antibiotics:

– they destroy beneficial bacteria in the human body, not only in the gut but in other organs and tissues

– they change bacteria, viruses and fungi from benign to pathogenic, giving them an ability to invade tissues and cause disease

– they make bacteria resistant to antibiotics, so the industry has to work on more and more powerful new antibiotics to attack these new changed bacteria. A good example is tuberculosis, where wide use of antibiotics has created new varieties of the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis resistant to all existing antibiotics

– they have a direct damaging effect on the immune system, making us more vulnerable to infections, which leads to a vicious cycle of more antibiotics and more infections

Antibiotics in Food

The problem of antibiotics overuse actually grew to proportions because it comes not only from prescription drugs, but from conventional food everywhere as well! This way, we are exposed indirectly to antibiotics since we are born and their negative effects are real.

Many large producers of meat and poultry feed antibiotics to their healthy food animals simply to offset the effects of overcrowding and poor sanitation, as well as to promote faster growth. Every year, nearly 30 million pounds of antibiotics are sold for use in food animals. In fact, up to 70% of all antibiotics sold in the United States go to healthy food animals.

Farmed fish and shellfish have antibiotics added, as well as a lot of fruits, vegetables and grains, legumes and nuts, which are sprayed with antibiotics to control disease.

Anti-Bacterial Cleaners

Modern times brought along the common belief that everything has to be disinfected and sterilized. But it’s been proven by numerous studies that constant use of conventional sanitizers and antibacterial soaps is also killing the beneficial bacteria on our hands – which are meant to actually protect ourselves from disease. In other words, resistant bacteria – “superbugs” – will develop, and a former common cold will morph into a much more virulent and harder to treat infection.

More Things You Can Do to Avoid Antibiotic-Resistant Infections
  • STOP taking antibiotics with the first infection, rely on NATURAL, effective, safe and powerful antibiotics with NO side effects. My favourites are raw propolis, grapefruit seed extract, oregano oil, echinacea, Manuka honey. When you really need to take a course of antibiotics, always follow with a course of probiotics, to counteract the negative effects and maintain a healthy gut flora.
  • Buy and eat only ORGANIC meat, eggs and dairy or at least those that haven’t had antibiotics added (you can find this on many product labels now).
  • Stay clean using natural, green cleaners for your body and house, and avoid anti-bacterial soaps, as well as harsh, toxic chemicals.
  • Live a healthy life, eat whole food and take responsibility of your own precious health so you don’t end up in hospitals and long-term care facilities, which are the most exposed environments to never-ending disease.
